Rebuilding Evo 4 block to prevent crankwalk
Hey there,
Im picking up a Evo 4 block for cheap with no symtoms of crank walk as of right now. The max play it has is approx 1mm and it looks to be good. I read that these blocks have oil squirters that draw oil pressure from the mains and thus decreasing oil pressure going to the mains. I will be plugging these squirters as I have no plans to run in excess of 400hp, or even 350hp, but my real question is whether or not to use the 6 bolt rods and bearings for the build since I've read that they are thicker. I just have to machine them to match the crank exactly.
Or just go with Manley long rods and ACL bearings and build it to Mitsubishi specs?

1mm of thrust? that's .039". The max allowable is .4mm, or .016"....That thing is smoked, sorry...

Oh *******, I just saw the tolerance. Well regardless I was gonna rebuild it anyways, as long as the block is good I can machine the crank to accept the bearings correct?

I would replace the crank. Once the thrust surface is torn up, its hard to save them and have them live.

Gotcha, perfect opportunity to pick up a used stroker. So you are saying if the block is good, meaning the bearings arent gouged into the mains or what not, the block can be usable and no inherent design flaw?

Correct. I would have the mains line honed just to be sure they're perfect and put it together.
Also, disable the clutch switch so you can start the car without pushing in the clutch.

Thanks buddy for the help. the guy says its max 1mm. I asked him to take a vido of it, but it doesnt even register on the video. I mean 1mm is small but still pretty evident in real life. So if everything checks out i'll either be using that whole rotating assembly, or slowly rebuilding it for more power

The only way to measure thrust is with a dial indicator. It's not something you can go by feel, or eyeball...
