I got my 2.3L short block last week, built by tscomptuned! Here are some pics:
Specs are:
- Brand new block from Mitsubishi (zero miles!)
- Manley billet crank
- Wiseco 1400HD pistons/rings
- Manley turbo-tuff I-beam rods
- ARP rod bolts
- ACL race bearings
- New frontcase with balance shaft deleted
Working on the head stuff now.. Will post up images when I figure out what I'm gonna do. For turbo, I'm most likely going with FP Green (84mm FAP, stainless steel, Tial MV-S WG, FP "bigger than stock" log manifold, STM downpipe/O2 housing)... I hate that the FP Green SS isn't "drop in", but I can't find anything else 100% stock frame with similar spool and power capabilities.
Thought they still have some drop in turbo's available...did you call them?
Oh, yea... I guess the MHI version would be drop-in. So many options - I totally forgot about that (Tom actually suggested I look at that one too). Yea, so might use the FP Green with MHI housing. Lead times on FP are insane though (4-6 weeks) - need to see if a shop has one on the shelf somewhere...
Why such a small turbo on that nice of a block. I'd go with a black at the least
As letsgetthisdone said, it's all about the spool! Two primary uses for the car:
- street driven
- road racing (technical tracks like Laguna Seca, Willow Springs, etc)
Although the block will handle 800-900WHP without a problem (and the transmission is a Shep-built 6-speed, built for 600whp), I'm aiming for 500-550whp max. The car will never see a drag strip, so I'm not looking for massive power at the expense of response. My key metrics are response and reliability (30min+ sessions at high load needs some good headroom!)
Also, looking stock-ish is important to me (because of where I live )
The car will also be running a FiTronic system for smooth E85-to-91 blending (been living with regular dual maps for a while and it's a pain!), so most of the power will be made at E85 (although I'm considering adding a 110 unleaded race gas map too, since E85 is impossible to get near CA race tracks!)
Ronaldo9 - yes, I would consider others. I was looking at Blouch, but it seems that the Dom 1.0XTR won't hit my power goals and the 2.0XTR is much slower to spool than the FPGreen? Any suggestions for other candidates appreciated! Even though cost is a factor, I'd consider something insanely priced too if it did what I wanted!
I put a FP red (twin scroll MHI housing, ball bearing) on it. Get the head, stock intake mani, and TB ported, go with GSC S2 or R2 cams. S2's will bring the power on a little earlier than the R2's.

Right now I have the Kelford 272's and SuperTech dual beehive springs - I was planning on reusing those. Originally I had wanted the S2's, but I couldn't find any (I even spoke with GSC), so I went with the Kelfords (which I do like, although I've never run the S2's before). From what I can tell, the S2 and Kelfords are very similar.
What's the spool like on the FP Red? From what I can tell it's slightly slower than the green (a few hundred RPMs?), but not by much?
Tom is a busy man and he is actually doing a 2.3 full build on my car including the head and I will be running my BBK-3B , can't wait to see how it spools only downside is I have no E85 in my area. Good luck with your build Rom.
You may also wan to consider the new FP 54 turbo. That would be a great turbo for what you are looking to do.
Hey Erik,
I looked at the FP 54 but didn't really consider it since it's a JB turbo.. Since I'm after the quickest spool time with my power target, I'd rather spend the extra $1K on the BB! Let me know if I'm missing something on the FP54 though! They mention something about response time being good on it, but don't really go in to detail on how it could be better than a BB..
I think right now the toss up is between the Green or the Red BB with the MHI housing..
