Because you can blow smoke into turbo and look for where smoke leaks out.
I tried that with a cigar into a vacuum line. Either I had no leaks or it just wasn't working. My data logs say leak.... boost leak test says there are none, so I gave up.

I swapped out for another set and solved the problem. Almost exact to what your describing in your "what am I missing" thread also found some interesting results when I resistance tested them pm me if you want more details or help!

PM sent. I found the testing procedure in the FSM today. I'll be testing them and hopefully finding my problem.

Update

I just wanted to update my thread. One major issue was the valve seals are roached. Drops of oil was found on top of two piston heads. The compression test did come out good across all 4 cylinder with a 15 difference between two cylinders. I'm going to go ahead and get the turbo sent of as well to get inspected.

So the head will have to be removed and sent to the machine shop. I'm looking at 8 to 10 hours of labor and about $890 for machine shop work on the head. Than all the new Misc parts such as water pump, gaskets, spark plugs, arp head studs, etc.

Since the head is coming off I thought about upgrading the cams as an option since this would be the best time to do it. what would be good cams to upgrade for a stock motor? i'm thinking about the HKS cams.

Would the bad valve seals cause my AFR to act all weird as well and lean out at idle?

But I just wanted to update this thread for the future when someone has the same issues as I did.

Yeah I'm looking at the GSC S1 cams. S2 May be overkill for a stock turbo and stock bottom end. Also I won't be pushing S2 cams to full potential. If My turbo need to rebuilt 'll rebuild it to a 35r

S2 is a great cam for stock turbos, too. Depends on what you want the car to do...but you can't go wrong with either.

I agree, if you put in valve springs and retainers S2 is a great option no matter the turbo

.

You're going to be pissed off when it goes back together and still smokes.

Are you going to pull the pistons too while it's apart?

It's normal when you've broken the ringlands.

Stemseals don't do that.

If he found "drops" of oil on pistons, doesn't that mean it is leaking from top? If rings are bad, I wouldn't expect to see drips of oil.

As for S1 vs S2, S2 needs more parts to be upgraded (are the beehive valve springs the newest thing?), so if you have the budget for rest of supporting mods, then go for S2. If tight budget, S1 with stock system is nice too.

Are you close to needing a timing belt change? If yes, go ahead and change with all misc parts (water pump, tensioner, etc)
