you have it either a little too much or a little too little tension. Take a picture of hole to see which way it is off.

Hard to get in there to see. Car has tq solution mounts and them ****s do not give. Passenger mount is off and motor barely moves. So you’re saying that tomorrow I should be able to still slide the pin in and out? It’s actually easy to do if the motor was out of the car. I get it dead on every time but that ****ing pin is annoying as ****. I’m also using a piece of wire as a pin. Maybe if I had the original grenade pin...

It's the valve springs trying to turn the cam gears which pulls on the tensioner.
That's why you turn the crank.

6 turns?

lol
4 stroke, 720 deg....2 turns.

I did turn the crank so it settles. I time it, make sure pin slides in and out, wait 15 min and make sure the little **** still slides in and out, turn the motor over **** load of times until I get everything lined up again, make sure pinnslides in and out. I’m saying after that I come back later and it got harder to slide in.

Not 2 turns. Oil pump sprocket is turns at 2/3 or 3/2 (I don't remember exactly) rate. It took about 6 turns for timing marks to line up again (if I remember correctly).

To be honest, I think you're close enough. I didn't wait a full day myself. You can be at this forever.

Now I'm wondering if I should go back and screw around with my tensioner to figure it out. I've seen how oil sprockets have failed from too much timing belt tension and don't want to be in that situation.

Yeah it takes about 6 turns. First 3 turns timing on crank lines up but cam gear dowels face down so you have to go 3 more turns and everything lines up. I spoke to a buddy who is a well known evo mechanic and he says it should be fine. Says by now it should have moved a bit because it’ll adjust to the valve springs wanting to push. He says if it doesn’t adjust then that’s where he’d be alerted. I think I’m close enough screw it.

Good to know!
It's so hard to work on timing belt with engine in car and Using that tool to put tension on belt while tightening bolt was frustrating to do and finding the pin got hard makes it even worse.

Did you use the Evo 9 timing belt with kevlar? I have Evo 8 belt in my car. Shop recommended 8 over 9 (probably because it stretch and give to reduce stress on oil sprocket?).

Can you post a picture of the position of tensioner pulley with the 2 holes?

Ah too late I just put everything together. I left the top timing cover off to keep an eye on the belt when car is running. I have an hks timing belt and it’s still in good condition so I reused it.
