Evo 8 won't start

Hey guys,

So I went to the car wash yesterday and as I was about to put it into first to head home it died. It won't start back up and it makes a weird noise when you are inside it sounds sort of like spinning or electrical. Under the hood near the cam sensor and oil to the turbo line sounds like ticking.

Any ideas on what this seems like would be helpful.

Provide us with more information? Mileage of your Evo? By reading your post and since you mentioned you can hear a spinning noise, is it your starter? Does it sound like a loud whine but the engine is not cranking? Regarding the ticking, is it a continuous sound of ticking?

based on the context, water probably got into one of the connectors under the hood. You could try using compressed air to blow them all out, then add some dielectric grease to prevent corrosion. The most important are going to be the crank angle sensor, cam angle sensor, and the spark plug coil pack connectors.

Do you have a COP setup?

Water in the spark plug holes is my guess.

Update 2003 98k miles

So I took out the starter and tested it. It was bad so I replaced it. I tested the new starter it worked. Instaled it but it still wouldn't turn on. I touched power directly to the starter and the car turned on. I tried it again turning it on with the key and if I turn it a bunch of times once in a while it will turn on. Any ideas now?

Starter relay or ignition switch.

If I recall there is a common issue with the ignition switch on the 8's.

Start by swapping the relay, if that doesn't work. You may need to repair/replace the ignition switch.

There is a common problem with these cars and the ignition switch. If you do a google search you will find a ton of threads. The symptoms you just described sound a lot like that.

Yes very true, I had to replaced my ignition switch this year and it's easy just make sure you have a short Phillips screwdriver and you will be fine. Before I replace mine I had to wiggle the key while it was the start position for it to crank.
