New engine blown 😕

hello,

So I Bought a built block and head from a well known engine builder (not gona metion name)

The block had:
custom pistons
I beam rods
625 head studs and main
acl bearings
o ringed
Half filed
OEM crank
Evo 9 HG
moroso oil pan
And supporting mods etc.

Head work included:
bigger intake valves 1mm , valve guides and gsc valve seals and gsc s3 cams and Kiggly HLA ect.

The valve cover had 3 ...8 an fittings to a vanted catch can

Stock 5 speed with tilton tripple 🤦‍♂️ was a nightmare to drive on street.

the car ran fine for 4k miles was tuned and made 780hp and 520tq on e85 @9300rpm

One morning the car started to smoke out of no where and what ever I tried it would not stop to smoke..new valve seals new HG etc nothing...it had no weird noises or any other symptoms.

Had to open it up too see as this was driving me crazy and found the bearing had marks, the piston skirts were all marked up the oil pump had deep marking on it too.

I just dont know what caused all this mess... i didn't run a air filter but that could NOT had caused this much damage so soon?
I was using 10w40 oil .

Oil pump was new

No air filter on a street car? That's a big problem.

Ill echo that running no filter is a bad idea.

do you have logs? Looks like the tune could be agressive.

The bearing looks like it had a bunch of trash go through it, and/or the tune is aggressive. The crank will polish up fine. The piston wear also points to the tune being aggressive, and/or the motor eating trash from not running an air filter.

Btw the compressiin was 10:1 also of the pistons...but many FF guys run car with out filter also i did have mesh on the tuebo...does this happen to them too?

The tune was done on pure ethnol mixed with 95 pump to give me e85 and was supposed to be a aggrasive tune...the tuner is also a very well known tuner so I suppose he knew what he was doing ...the car shouldn't have knock with eithnol tho 🤔 which could cause the pistons to wear out so soon.

Why on earth wouldn't you run an air filter on a street car? Honestly asking this as a real question.

I'm always amazed by how many people don't run filters.

You wouldn't take the filter off a car with no turbo, but start SHOVING the air in there, and yea, lets not have a filter.

Never understood it, hopefully you get it sorted. Those pistons don't look great...

Yes you are rite it was stupid of me not to run a filter but the car is driven for 3 to 4k max ..even without filter it can't be this much damage? The ff kit I got didn't come with a filter and taught ill get it sorted later after I finish the tuning but covid hit and I couldnt get a filterin time.. ..the tuning was done by a professional tuner so I dont think its the tuning fault besides I was running ethnol 85% so it can't be knock the cause .

Oh well I learnt my lesson.. will run filter next time 🙄

Well, now you'll have more space in your bank account.

Not sure where this rumor started. Yes, yes it can, and it's more sensitive to pre-ignition than gasoline.

Hahahahah you are so funny 😶✌✊✊

But yes I understand when you get knock on e85 its too late...but the tune went fine ...but im saying I have the logs and I don't see anything wrong with them...but not running a filter and the scraches i see indicates that the damage is caused by Debri 😵

I have seen guys running FF turbo and they run a small k&n style cone filter that clamps right on the turbo inlet , would of been better then nothing . Good luck with your next build and filter.
