EVO 9 4G63 2.2L MIVEC - Turbo Selection

Hi Guys,

Looking for some advice on what turbo to put on an Evo 9 4G63 2.2L MIVEC engine (Nitto 2.2L stroker kit including billet crank) that’s in the process of getting built.

I’ll mainly be using the car for timed events on the circuit and track days etc. about 80% of the time and the other 20% of the time the car will be driven on the street. The car will be running E85 with 1650 injectors whilst ultilising a flex tune setup as E85 isn’t that available down under. Also have a locally made Plazmaman long runner inlet manifold and Bosch DBW throttle body that will be part of the package.

I’m aiming for around 400 to 450 kw at the wheels (536 to 600 WHP), however I don’t won’t to sacrifice spool for power, so if I can have a fast-spooling setup with good response to get the car out of tight corners at around 550WHP I’ll take it. I’m thinking that with a 2.2 MIVEC there should be some good low-down torque + earlier spooling due to the MIVEC. Unsure of boost levels at this stage, would anticipate somewhere in the vicinity of 25 to 32 psi to make this power.

I’ve listed some options below that I feel might be a good fit but open to suggestions:

1. Garrett G30-770 with 0.83 A/R

I’ve seen some good results posted on this forum from an Evo 8 (non MIVEC) and feel that this combo should be quite responsive.

2. Garrett G30-900 with 0.83 A/R

I can’t find much data with this setup on a 2.2 MIVEC, so it’s seems to be somewhat uncharted territory.

3. Borg Warner EFR 7670 with 0.92 A/R Twin Scroll

Twin scroll should make this nice and responsive but may not make the power I’m after.

4. Borg Warner EFR 8374 with 0.92 A/R Twin Scroll

Twin scroll could make this spool earlier than the Garrets and have seen this combo on an Evo 9 with good results, just unsure about its linear response down low.

Again, really want to minimise lag, not really concerned with cost, just want to try to do as much research as possible to size the correct turbo to my application the first time.

Thanks.

The 2.2 Mivec engine works really well. Great choice.

500whp+ on the road course in these cars will push the cooling, braking and traction limits somewhat.

The new G30-770 should work well on the road course and they are well known for reliability . The .83 housing will spool up well but I would measure backpressure just to have the data.

Thanks for the feedback Abacus.

I've updated the radiator & thermostat for better cooling + installed a Moroso larger sump & accumulator for any loss in oil pressure that may occur during cornering and /or braking. Also updated discs, pads and suspension so should be a nice circuit package once complete.

IMO - 400-420kwatw with EFR7670 with IWG and 0.92 TS housing.
The garrett options are not twin scroll.
EFR's are extremely well proven. Sure they dont have the biggest flow numbers, but they will definitely make up to around 450kwatw with E85 and kill mode.

I am having a second evo built but my first one has the .83 on a TS gtx3071g2 and i've already made 600whp dynojet, but thats with a secondary fuel system for methanol. My second build is a 2.2L and would plan for a way bigger turbo. For around town the first car is great but on the track where your rpms are high anyways theres no point running such a small turbo in my experience. But hey if u want to buy my old setup LMK lol.

Thanks for the feedback guys, I've ended up ordering the BW EFR8374 Twin Scroll T4 1.05 A/R.

I'll keep you updated on how the setup goes once tuned.

AMS oil pan is a very modest bandaid for oil-surge control: consider at least adding Accusump- it is a MUST. And drysump if at all possible, for track -car on sticky tires.
if just enjoying track-days on road tires, than a good baffled oil pan with Accusump should be ok. Toyo R888, Toyo RR, Hoosier, Hankook 214 and so forth, various sticky tires will generate enough grip to challenge oil pickup.

Thanks for the info mate, I've already order the Accusump, hopefully this combined with the larger baffled sump should work well to control oil surge.
