Precision 6466 shaft play after 2,500 miles?!?

Just a little back story, got a built 2.3l with a sheepey 6466 forward facing kit with about 2500 miles and recently been trying to figure out why i got this bluish smoke when you blip the throttle at decel and sometimes during cold start.

https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ev...ecel-idle.html

Did a leak down, comp test and everything seem good. Also added a .045” restrictor with no luck. Called Precision and advised me to install an oil pressure regulator. In the process, went ahead and did a boost leak test and this is when I noticed the shaft play on the turbo.

Anybody else had similar issues with Precision turbos?

Hard to tell from the video, Axial (in and out) or radial play? A tiny amount of play is normal, but it shouldn't be super noticeable.

In and out to the point where you can kind of hear a “clunk”. No up and down play. Blades also not hitting the housing.

thrust play should be very minor so it you can definitely feel it along with a "clunk," then you likely have wear in the thrust bearing. I would advise you pull the turbo and sent it in for inspection to avoid a potentially larger problem should it fail.

Thanks, Thats what I was thinking as well. Got off the phone with Precision not too long ago and said typically if its not touching the compressor housing it should be good. They wanted to see how it was with oil press regulator and report back.

You can do an oil pressure regulator, or drop the restrictor down to an .030".

Shaft "play" looks fine in video. Can also confirm what precision said that if the wheels don't touch the housings, its really fine.

Doesn't look too bad at all as others have said.

Just don't be too surprised if it does **** the bed, low mileage failures is what PTE is known for best.

If the thrust bearing starts to wear then the pounding on that bearing gets exponentially worse as the gap increases, which also sends crap through the motor. BTW, whether or not the wheel is hitting the housing is irrelevant when the thrust bearing is worn.
