old Apexi ECU/boost controller

When I was at Ralliart the other day Tony mentioned an old Apexi device that he use to fit that had a button in the cabin that was set up to give extra boost for 15 seconds or so when pressed, I'm not sure if it was a boost controller or a the ECU that he was referring too (we were talking about ECU's at the time). Has anyone got any idea about this? or has anyone got something similar fitted atm?

I guess this could work ok although I've not thought over all the implications, not sure there is much point running a lower boost all the time and then changing peak/sustained just for 15 seconds, bit of a waste paying for and then not using the mods all the. I guess you could use it to temporally boost over what's safe, but hell I don't think that's a good idea at all

ideas?

No reason it couldn't be done (assuming that the programmed "overboost" was still safe for the engine), although the only reason I could see for it would be for fuel economy. The more air getting to the engine, the more fuel you need to put in to stop it running too lean, so high boost = less economy.

I've been wondering whether ECU's can hold more than one map, switchable, so I could have an "economy" map for traffic cruising (low boost and little advance), and one or more "sports" maps for full power/torque... kinda like the sports mode BMW's etc have switchable from the cabin.

Certainly feasible, although I doubt there is any off the shelf solution available (I certainly haven't heard of one yet).

I asked the same question a while ago and the short answer is no

you could change the maps with the motec, Link and GEMS but you'd need a PC to do it

There's an overboost function on most boost controllers, also the Blitz SBD-id. I don't use it, cause it's plain silly to run higher boost than the engine can take, even if it's only for 10-15 seconds.
Claudius, you don't need an HKS F-Con to store several maps, if you get a GEMS or any other racing ECU with the software, you just save them on your laptop.

Hmmm, that's quite good then, but I'm still sure that the GEMS will be the better option....

Hi Chaps,

So this is where you've been hiding! Seems a pretty good board, a bit short on good technical input but we can soon put that right.
I will be speaking to Chuck soon (He posted some info about Ralliart on the MLR, remember!) as he lives local to me and has GEMS fitted, so I will pick his brains and get some good Info on set up etc.

dedeffa,

Theres no point in running overboost because if the engine can run safely at this overboost setting, which it must do or you risk damage, then you might aswell run this as max held boost all the time!

Clivew

PS I have put a couple of pics on the gallery, one of my EVO and another at Cadwell park last year following my mate in his Skyline

We ain't hiding, just went to greener pastures. Read the stuff that Chuck said about Ralliart, I think people suggested it was made up. Or was that just MLR propaganda?!?

Clive, you boys were the fastest by far at Cadwell last year, suppose your mate with the Skyline can really drive, considering he had to haul that big piece of metal through the twisties.

Michael,

It definately was not made up, I spoke to Chuck on the phone last week and it was a totally factual post, but sometimes people do not like the truth when it is not in their favour.

My mate Shaun with the Skyline is a nutter, but he does have an extra 100 Bhp over me!
He did spin off through the twisties on one lap, but stopped before he hit the barrier.

I have to say it sounded completely legitimate to me. There's just too much politics on the MLR trying to please the tuners, it's completely lost it in my opinion, but that's hardly a secret
At least here you can really post what you think.

Clive

any news on the Sports ECU front?

Otherwise I'll see soon a group buy of GEMS ECUs lurking around the corner

Michael

the GEMS looks more and more interesting. Due to my good contacts here a Motec mapper would fine tune the basic map for me. As this is more passion for him than profession the price will be quite good. And he's got a nice track record (and as stockmarket conditions improve so does my wallet!)

Cheers

Mike
