Mine did the same.. Only it would grind regardless of engine speed while going faster than 60mph.

I just had my 5th gear synchro replaced last week by the dealer, and they did not give me any trouble at all. In fact, they were willing to replace just about anything I could come up with, which probably means they just wanted to make some money that day. Either way, I am just hoping this one holds up longer than the factory synchro did. It shifts soooooooo much better now, but only time will tell.

BTW, my 5th gear would grind at any rpm while accelerating above 60 mph, so it doesn't have to be WOT.

I'm wondering if it's a problem with REPLACEMENT clutches, not necessarily the stock original...

i didnt read all the posts but I have been driving the 4g63 for like 6years now. I havent had any problems. I can say that I am not perfect and have shifted too fast before and grinded the gears without engagement (ouch). But as far as aggressive shifting, I guess my foot and hand are syncronized when shifting because I dont have any grinding probs.

I was just at the dealer on friday for my 5th gear syncro... and they told me that it is a problem with the evo... they have been seeing quite a few evo's for this problem... and I also found out that my TC is leaking for a second time.... They give us such a beautiful car but it aint build worth a ****.... and my car is stock.... i'm afraid to put any aftermarket parts on because it will probably kill the car.........

My car was really bad 3rd going into 4th, but then I changed all my fluids and it was sooooo much better. I just wish I didn't wait so long to chnage the fluids then my synchors would still be perfect.

Thumbs down 03 or 04 ....

Would you all say that this is a problem with the 03 or 04 models? I have an 04, and now I'm getting kinda scared! Hopefully Mits recognized the problem and fixed it for the 04's, and then again maybe not. I don't have any mods, but I was getting a gritty feel going into 3rd gear, then I adjusted the clutch pedal. Now it seems a little better and I shift into gear a little slower. Mind you my car is only 3 weeks old.

I have bought many cars in the past 5 years ( I would say over 8 cars)

Best cars I had in order
VWR32 no problems built like a rock much fun to drive its fast but of course not like the EVO
RSX S as we all know HONDA great cars
S2000 clutch problem but the dealer replaced it in 2 DAYS and they kissed my a$$

EVO nothing but $$$ ALthough I love it but you need a bank behind this car

Adjusting the clutch can go a long way when it comes to making your car shift better. I tried adjusting my clutch so lower the engagement point and it did not like it. Shifting got a lot more notchy, so I adjusted it to engage near the top of the pedal travel and shifts are now smooth again.

My car is now making a really loud winning noise on decel now in first at slow speeds, much louder than a normal decel noise. Anyone know what it is.

Hey guys,
just want to share with you that I used to have shift to 2nd and 4th gears problems at high RPM (6000 RPM or more) after the dealer replaced my clutch with ACT clutch. They never adjust it right. The clutch always smell and I had the shift problem as noted.
So after 5k miles, it was gone. Then RRE replaced my car with another ACT disc (just the disc) and a light-weight fly-wheel. They did great job. The clutch feels right and the shift problem gone. Originally, I thought it was the synchro problem. So as mentioned by some others here, it maybe the clutch adjustment too.
