I dont understand what the deal is? Yes there are evo out there with gear grinding problems, but mitsu has recently came out with a service bulliton to fix this. See your dealer and get it taken care of. Mine started to clunk and grind when going from 2ed to 3ed at low rpm. I took it in and they ordered the updated syncro kits for those gears. Then the parts came a little later and now my car seems to shift fine. So i told them to hold th parts for a while just to see if it comes back. Its one thing to ask how many people have had this problem but i see to many posts hating on mitsu about something they are trying to fix. And please take it to dealer before you start using all the wonder fluilds to try to fix it. Yeah they might work but if you have any other problems then they can use that against you. hope this helps

I did take it to the dealer. They refused to fix it, that was 7 months ago when I started feeling it and they said that's how EVO shifts . Now last week I replaced my clutch because I heard that this could fix it believing in what Mitsu dealer told me (clutch). Now if I take it back they will say your clutch has been replaced we wont cover it when they were spouse to fix it the first time. Mitsu is Not trying to fix it as there is no re-call for it.

I had the secong gear grind, but when I changed to the B&M shifter, I also changed the bushings on the shifter mount and at the top of the trans. I had read long ago that just the simple swap could be enough to allign the syncro's for flawless operation.

It worked for me. Oh yeah, change the fluid too. Stock sucks.

There's a TSB on this stuff.....

It was filed under Lancer, not Lancer Evolution. How clever of them. Maybe it was an honest mistake, but I have a feeling that this is there way of dealing with the problem in the eyes of NHTSA, but keeping the owners of the car in the dark. Here it is in plain black and white.

There's actually quite a few TSB's that were filed under Lancer, not Lancer Evolution....Hmmm....

Make: MITSUBISHI
Model: LANCER
Year: 2003
Service Bulletin Number: 0322001
NHTSA Item Number: 10005282
Summary Description:
NEWLY CONFIGURED 5TH GEAR SYNCHRONIZER SLEEVE FOR 2003 LANCER EVOLUTION MANUAL TRANSMISSION. *PH

...Now who knows what this means, but obviously they have an updated, newly configured 5th gear synchro sleeve. What was so bad with the old one? I think you should point out this TSB to the dealership and ask them to explain.

So under the TSB, Mitsu just replaces the 5th gear synchro sleeve and not the actual 5th gear synchro?

They'ed be stupid enough to not replace the syncro and replace just the sleeve.

But I believe they replace everything that's associated with 5th gear.

Oh well , that's Mitsu for you.

Not sure. I've never had a problem with my transmission, so I wouldn't know. I simply did a query on the NHTSA website and dug around a bit in both the Lancer and Lancer Evolution categories and found this. Just thought I would pass it along. Obviously Mitsu has had some form of "addressing" the problem, though....

I was up last night till 3AM reading about Synchronizers and so on. We just need to know the truth and have a TRUE re-call not some TSB.. Do we have lawyers on EVOm here that knows more about the law of issues with cars?? we must have one.. I am going to call some people on Monday and start something (don’t know yet) so far the votes are way more than what I thought.. More than %70 have or had issues.. Mitsu needs to solve EVO tranny issues once and for all

It’s not my responsibility to fix their mistakes, after all I am the customer here and I am not wiling to spend $1 extra now. I have replaced my clutch and when the shop removed my clutch was fine after 20K (that’s how easy I drove and babied the car) of course I had some fast runs but that what I bough the car for. It has 7K rpm and it should work. I will not change anything any more I could put 10K and even more and the problem might still persist due to the design.

The poll shows the most problems from 1-2, then 2-3, then 4-5, then 3-4. My theory is that people are trying to shift faster, and therefore screwing up more in the lower gears because these are the gears where there is the smallest time in gear. 4-5 is higher because it is a little tricky sometimes to get it in (so to speak).

I agree that the Evo may be more finicky than some other cars and that you need to slow down and make sure you are shifting right. Not only is it easier on the gears (no grinding), you save your clutch if you let the RPMs drop more too.

I was having the problems listed under the TSB. I had the work done and the synchro was replaced in the process. If I wasnt deployed at the moment I would post the part numbers of the parts changed.

How do you explain that I can shift from 1st to 2nd with no issues and when I go with the same speed of shifting from 3rd to 4th it grinds? How come some EVO owners are having a grind no matter what RPM they are on or what speed( it will grind). it will get worse untill it falls apart.
