Noise from power steering

I just purchased an 03' WW evo and already I've got a problem. As soon as I jumped into the car and turned it on, and while I was turning the steering wheel I hear a noise coming from the front everytime I turn the wheel almost like its low on p/s fluid. So I checked the fluid and it seemed OK. Noise only happens when the car is still, while I'm driving it the noise is gone.

What do you guys think it is?

Yep, thats it .. But it seems like its not even weather related. Seems more of like a problem, but I really don't know what.

I have a Vishnu Stage1+ kit on it and I'd really hate to take the car to Mitsh and have it voided.

Are you locking the steering wheel? If you put you're steering wheel all the way to the left or right causing it to lock, it will cause your power steering pump to make that whine. Its just a sign that you're overworking it for no reason.

It could be the slighest movement, not even a full lock or full turn. Slightest turn while at a full stop, it will make a ERRR sound.

that started happening on my 05 STi after doing continuous doughnuts and drifting.
most likely from holding the steering in full lock for too long. the power steering has a bypass for the high pressure of the power steering fluid. in a car that is working properly it makes a whining noise if you hold in in full lock. if the powersteering pump or bypass is broken it will do this all the time. my steering wheel would also shake and feel very jerky when i was turning the steering wheel at a dead stop. it would also make the same noise you mentioned. but if i was moving at all or revv the engine a little to increase rpm on the power steering pump.. it would stop.
the techs at my local subaru dealership couldnt figure it out. so i sold it and bought my EVO.
but maybe the techs at our dealer would be smart enough to replace the power steering pump.

If it gets worse have it check out. Mine went out at >10k miles and was replaced under warrenty.. I had noise at first then slowly the car got harder and harder to steer. It's a pretty install and shouldnt take very long.

Ive got the same problem with my 03. Mine is still under warranty so I'm getting the pump replaced if they can ever get one in thats not damaged. My dealer has had 2 pumps come in slightly damaged. They showed me to prove it because I thought it was a little if-e.

Same deal here. Makes a whining noise when first starting up. It's not as bad if the temp is over 40 degrees, or the car is warmed up. I took the tension off the serpentine belt to check it out. The pully turns freely with no load on it... but it does move laterally about 1-2mm.
For me it's only slightly annoying, and the dealer said to bring it in for a replacement if it gets any worse. Otherwise Alldata lists the price of a replacement pump at $684.67

Wellif the noise is temperature related, then it is a faulty steering pump because when the car is cold (just turned on) the components are further apart and the inner lip seal isnt doing its job, but as the temp increases, it expands enough to push the inner lip seal to hold preassure the way its supposed to. that groaning noise is air entering the pump system when it is trying really hard to assist power. the noise happens when your turning slightly as well you said? that sounds more of a faulti frony wheel bearing which can be fixed easliy by WD-40ing the upper bushing (as this is common for the grease to seep out and have it make noise), just do one and if it persists, check the other side (only the fronts though, cause they are the turning wheels that produce the problem). you can PM and ill tell you a step by step procedure for replacing the inner lip seal.
