How to verify if I have a Walbro 255?

You're making it sound like it should be as loud as an external pump that's been hard mounted to the frame or something.
You shouldn't be telling people what they do or don't hear as you have never been in my car and can't say for sure.

Do you have a grounding kit by chance? Or is your exhaust really loud? There are probably many variables that I can't even think up, but I doubt the fuel pumps are just somehow "different."
I don't have a grounding kit and a look at my sig will tell you all my mods. My exhaust is not really all that loud compared to most aftermarket systems I've had.
You can doubt the pumps are somehow "different" all you want but you can't argue with people who tell you that theirs doesn't make any noise. Where's the logic in that?

1) They don't recognize it as being the fuel pump whine, or
2) It was not installed properly, or
3) They can't hear it, because the sound is overrun by other, louder car noises,
4) There is an unidentified factor that causes them to not be audible in certain cars.
I don't believe in the 5th possible option, which is that some Walbros are loud and others aren't. That wouldn't make any sense...
My list of cars:
1985 Buick
1986 Mitsu Starion
1989 Mustang 5.0
1966 Mustang Fastback (w/ stroker motor.....bracket car)
1993 Mazda RX7
1996 LT4 Corvette
2001 Z06 Corvette (highly modded)
2002 Z06 Corvette
2002 WRX (POS)
2004 EVO8
In all the cars but the Buick, Starion, and WRX my cars have had aftermarket fuel pumps.
I know what the whine should sound like.
In my 66 with the stroker motor, 2 chamber Flowmasters with dump down tips, gear drive, and a flex fan, I could still hear the external electric fuel pump whine over everything else. That was a loud fuel pump.
My Evo8 with the Walbro fuel pump doesn't whine enough to be heard, not even when I'm really trying.
I have done almost all my own wrenching on all my cars (except ring and pinion, etc.) so I'm pretty sure I managed to get the fuel pump in there right. It's been running fine since December and put down 315hp to the wheels.
It might be overrun by the exhuast, but you are saying that the whine is so bad that some people replace them. If that were the case, I'm pretty sure I would be able to hear it over the exhaust. Plus, there are others in this thread who don't hear it.
I'm going to have to go with options 4 or 5.

Okay, I just installed another one of these just now for a guy I sold it to here locally:

And guess what? No whine, and his car runs fine.
