I'm 20 and work as a server at an upscale restaurant. I go to school full time and still live with my parents, but i pay for my car payments, insurance, mods, and pretty much everything else except rent. And props to all the young guys starting their own businesses!

Quote: i do wonder about this myself sometimes...me myself i use to work for a cell phone store and now i work for my moms tanning salon and i make decent money...enough to afford nice clothes and my 350z with some extras....but then again i am a little tight...right now im in a weird situation...i love CARS! they are not just cars to me its also a hobby....i dont make tons of money right now but i would really like to invest in a nice duplex...live in then rent the other half out...then when im 31-32 and its payed off i am making a decent income from renting it out....also the fact that almost any real estate goes up in value is great also...im in a perdicament where i dont know if i should buy a evo after i sell my 350z...or should i drive a beater for the next couple years? its a really hard call for me...i personally dont feel that i will be happy unless i have a decent car...help me out older guys!
Get a beater Evo. There are some out. I mean a high mileage '04 RS shouldn't cost much at all.

I'm 29 and a software engineer. Single-income, no kids, no wife, and the car payment + insurance + maintenance still chews a big hole in my wallet. I'm on my 4th set of brake pads, 4th set of tires, god knows how many oil changes and tanks of gas. The evo is a killer lol.

Some one a while back said you need to make 50 to afford an Evo in CA. I live in LA I think its more with our $279 gas. I also wonder how many people really "afford" and Evo. When I hear things: like "21,work at starbucks or insert other low paying job here" or the like how do you pay rent/insurance/gas on that type of pay? and even more confusing some of those guys are mod hounds?

I'm not insulting I am asking becuase it seems like I missed a how not to **** away money class somewhere.
Yeah no kidding, I'm single & no kids & I made over $60K last year, and I can barely afford the damn thing with no mods lol. Dunno how people manage it.

When I was in the process of getting my 05, I offered the dealer $37K cash out the door for an 05 MRand he said forget it someone will give us $42K for it, and you know what? Someone did, a week later a Navy E-4 brought that car and paid $42K+ for it, unfricking believeable.

Dude dealerships in military towns are known for their predatory lending. Guys come back from long deployments with a year's worth of hazard pay and they want to throw it at the first thing that moves.
