Beating an '05 GTO

My buddy has been shopping for cars recently, and I think he's going to buy a 2005 Pontiac GTO. If you don't know this car, it's a monster. I had seen them, but never ridden in one till we went on a test drive. Wow. For a bone stock car, it has an enormous amount of torque and power throughout the band. Looking at the specs below, it doesn't seem THAT fast...so maybe it just feels faster than it is. However, take a look at that top speed...damn!

Anyway, my main question is whether or not I need an aftermarket turbo (was about to be happy with just an MR turbo before all this) to put the smack down on my friend. Of course, I can't just let him have the faster car!

Engine : V8, OHV, front engine RWD
Displacement : 5,970 cc
Valve : 16 valves, 2 valves per cylinder
Transmission : 6-spd manual, 4-spd automatic
Fuel economy : city - 18-19 mpg
highway - 25-28 mpg

Horsepower : 400 hp @ 5200 rpm
Torque : 395 lb-ft @ 4000 rpm
Redline : 6500 rpm

Top speed : 175 mph(est.)
0-60 mph : 4.6 sec.(manual est.)
0-¼ mile : 13.5 sec @ 106.0 mph(manual est.)

No need for a turbo upgrade ... you can still beat a stock GTO with the stock turbo and appropriate mods ...

350whp and you should be able to take him, but he'll probably won't leave the gto stock either.

you really dont need a bigger turbo unless you guys awnt to race from a roll or something...i mean this is assuming you know how to launch your car

just couple of basic mods (intake, exhaust, ecu, etc) should be more than enough

The 05 GTO is a quick car the 6 speed will take a stock Evo. I raced a 6 speed with exhaust up to about 120mph with my mods and had no problem. A set of cams and a good tune should do the trick.

Thanks for the support, guys.

Right now, I have the following:
- EMS
- Hallman MBC @20psi
- HKS RS Intake pipe (from MAF to turbo only)
- APS CAI (from MAF to open element filter)
- AMS FMIC
- AMS LICP

I've ordered my TBE and have a resonated pipe ready to replace my cat. When I get this installed, I may feel a little better against his new car. Till then, though, his stocker GTO will beat me. I know it. In fact, I may need to do the MR turbo and cams to be sure I won't lose. They are quick....very quick.

That's an extremely strange set of mods. All that with no exhaust and no cams? Weird, but at least you have a TBE on the way now...

I saw a guy running at the track while I was with my friend. A stock 05 GSR was beating the 05 GTO all day! If you are a bad driver watch out.

That's another story. The TBE has been on order for a month now. It's coming from Japan and won't be shipped until the 25th of this month (AVO).

As for the other mods, I installed a remote radar detector (Passport SRX) and needed to take off the front bumper to install the 3 front sensors. I figured that since I had the bumper off, I should do everything I wanted to do at once -- so I did the FMIC/LICP/ and CAI all in the same day.

So, maybe that clears things up a bit. TBE is on the way, and cams are likely to follow along with an MR turbo.

The 04s weren't as impressive but the 05s are VERY impressive and take mods very well.

They are a good car for the money IMO, I wouldn't race one from a roll unless you're putting down some serious power =p
