i have driven both cars. drove the MR yesterday, drive the 06 STI last weekend.
The MR gearbox and suspension setup alone is worth a nobel price. For me its worth those 3k....

Not to forget about the EVO's steering..... i have been going in several 996s, and the feeling for the steering wasnt any better, if at all.....

EVO wins on every performance measurement except skidpad, where STI pulled 0.01g more.:

0 - 60 mph: EVO 4.7; STI 5.1
0 - 100 mph: EVO 12.7; STI 13.8
1/4 mile: EVO 13.5 @ 105.9 mph; STI 13.6 @ 99.6 mph
Braking 60 mph: EVO 116 ft.; STI 120 ft.
Braking 80 mph: EVO 204 ft.; STI 216 ft.
Slalom: 69.0 mph; STI 68.2 mph
Skidpad: STI 0.92g; EVO 0.91g

The author said: "In my opinion, there is no car that will love you more than an EVO will. As a road warrior, its sharpness, directness, and aggressive yet forgiving nature leave the STI no choice but to step aside."
evo wins at road and track
but not in motor trend

IMO the base EVO is better than the STI and the MR. I know I will get flamed for this, but the 6 speed gearbox in both cars is nothing but a gimmick. It does not improve the mileage of the MR over the GSR, and it is an extra shift that has to be made most of the time. I drove an STI on the track once and I hated life due to the short gear ratios on the 6 speed gear box. I do not know if the MR is the same, but I did not want to get one just in case it is.

In the upcoming isses of one of the car mags, they went out of their way and PAID to rent a 5 speed EVO for a comparo even though they were given a 6 speed MR. I find this pretty interesting to say the least.

..i sat in an EVO GSR and shifted and i sat in MR and shifted. Its not the maybe useless 6th gear, its the way it shifts.

6 weeks ago I was shopping for an Evo or a STI.

Drove the STI first then the Evo. Scared the heck out of 2 salesmen. I came to the same conclusion that R+T did and bought the Evo that day.

Glad to see that they agree with my choice.

If you are lucky, your insurance company won't know what an EVO is. Mine insures it as a "Mitsubishi Lancer."

That's great until you get in an accident. Then, if the insurance company doesn't try to accuse you of fraud, they'll probably deny coverage to the damage of your car.

no matter what the magazines say.. in real life once the mods start being added the subaru gets blown away due to its thin walled aluminum block 2.5 without a closed deck. Untill they give the usdm market a more equal engine to the 4g63 the subaru will always be the 2nd best option.
