your statement above is true, but it is not how the auto dealerships are ran.

I drove up the first time in my 78 ford pickup. it's not much to look at, but it's clean. they wouldn't even look at me. came back again 2 days later in my modded 98 eclipse gst and 2 were all over me, test drive in less than 5 minutes. both times in jeans and tshirts. I was 35 at the time. most(not all) car salesmen are all about what you drive up in.

when I go in for service, I leave the car for the day. I get looks and salesmen coming out when i drop it off, assuming, I think that I am looking to trade it in, but when I go back in my ford, same day, same clothes, I don't even get them looking up from their chairs.

I can guarantee that the guy in the story, 19 or not, will get a better inital response from the sales team driving up in that 3 series than he ever will in his lancer, irregardless of how he carries himself.

(again, this is not all salesmen but 98%)

With proper education comes money and respect. Mixing verb tenses and using make-up words like "irregardless" probably won't get you a test drive. Are you in the auto dealership arena? And is there a "cheat sheet" for noob salesman that says something like "if they drive up in a clunker, don't give them a test drive"? If not, then how do you know other than personal experience? Anyone who says "irregardless" to me, shows his education level.

Maybe one day when you grow up, you'll realize how childish it is to mess around with people's livelyhoods. I would think whatever your parents do for a living to put you through school is something you respect and that you hope people do the same for them.

You have it all wrong if you think experienced sales people at a mainstream (inexpensive) brand car lots like Mitsubishi only look for well-healed customers in late model high dollar cars.

i think it is age more than anything because me and a couple of my friends got cursed out by some mitsu salespeople because we were looking at the evo and then we poped the hood and started looking at the engine. then the salespeople locked the evo cause they didnt want us looking at it.

I would make the argument that is has nothing to do with age, but more to do with courtesy and respect for property. Noone, and I mean even a 98 yr. old noone, has the right to open a car door at a dealership and pop the hood without a salesman saying "sure, go right ahead!"

its like interviewing for a director of finance position with jeans and a t-shirt vs suit, needless to say.... first impressions do make a difference

Bobaab,

I think the salesman was just eager to sell a car. A BMW 325 for someone that nows about car it will be a joke. I was stationed overseas not long ago and you could get a basic 325i for just a hair under $25000. Even up to last year you could pick up a Mercedes C230 kompressor for just $28000, that is less than a Evo RS.

Anyway, sometimes the all show no go might work for some. The moment the salesman gets serious and ask you: Ok lets see your income. Lets see your credit score. Lets see for how long have you been employed with your employer. then the game is over, you wouldn't even get a test drive.

And if you are finacially ready to buy the Evo at the age of 19 then get ready to go negative numbers the moment you drive the Evo and have to pay full coverage.

Maybe you can get a test drive if the salesman already checked that your are finacially ready.

my 2c

IMHO:

How you present yourself unquestionably makes a difference in how people perceive you.

For most people, what you drive defines who you are in American society.

I don't really think there's anything wrong with having a little fun at the salesman's expense; especially during off hours when they aren't busy. Most of those guys are a little crooked, there's one good one for every 10 slimeballs.

And plus, I am a potential customer. I will most likely buy an Evo when I graduate..in 2 or 3 years who knows that's not too far from now...

Don't ask me...ask the salesman who made such assumptions.
Sorry, i forgot i'm replying to a 19 year old kid

Some salespeople treat customers differently according to age. The thing is, would you really except a 19 year old to have the ability to purchase a on average 30K vehicle on their own? I stood out from this average crowd because I am 19 and also a proud Evo owner. I am attending an university as well as working as a salesperson at a dealership. I know how both sides feel.

Being a salesperson, it sucks to have a person come in and just to demo the vehicle. After doing a walkaround with them and test drive they decide to just walk out. A lot of times, even when you ask "When is your time frame on purchasing a new vehicle?" they will say "As soon as possible." However, when they return from the test drive they don't even seem interested in the price of the vehicle, no negotiations no nothing, they just walk out. Not only is it a waste of time for the salesperson, but it puts mileage on the cars that could have been used properly by the actual intended owner.

On the other hand, being a younger customer myself, I would like to get treated right and with respect from the salesperson. So what I'm saying is basically, don't abuse the privilege of having a salesperson help you out and don't wander into a dealership knowing that you have no intention of buying and going through the entire sales process before telling the salesperson that you were: "Just looking around."

Irregardless is a word, but is not a commonly accepted one.

One of the dumbest quotes ive ever seen (if it werent for fastestevar)
Difference is, you PAY for college to get an education, you don't pay the gentleman to waste his time. College is something you WANT to do, this guy does not want you to waste his time. You don't have to take exams, but your 19, you can make your own mature, responsible decisions.

damn guys, calm down. This wasn't a horrible prank or something that truely ruined a salesman's day. The salesmen at me dealership are wasting their own time most of the day and love just talking about the specs of the evo when I'm bored and waiting on the service department. I know bob and he wouldn't do this type of thing if there was a potential sale in the area and it sounds like he didn't even take the offered test drive. right or wrong, it probably didn't hurt anyone, and I have been in sales for years, so save the horror stories. I know it is anoying to have "just looking" people, but it is unavoidable in sales. just my .02 though

Here are my 2 cents:

1. Every last one of you owes me my last 5 minutes of life back for reading this post.
2. The only "lame" part of this is that this kid thought this was a good story or that he was special for doing it. People do this all the time... not only kids... a lot of adults do it also. Believe me, I sell cars.
3. When will someone back me up on one simple fact, and this is much more note worth than this thread... Side Window Air Deflectors look gay!
4. The only way to make this story noteworthy is to change it so that at the end the kid decides that he actually wants the EVO, but then the "salesman" runs off, because he was actually just a loner hanging out at a dealership pretending to be a salesman. NOW THAT WOULD BE POST WORTHY!
