hey, i live off campus from purdue and i been to that dealership and also had delt with brad... he is a nicer person to deal with.. but there is this other guy with him..not sure the name... he is an dick in all perspective...not sure what his name was... so stay away from him..

i was at a mazda dealership...the salesman was cool but the manager was an dick..he mistaken me as some other guy and started talking ****...got me very very confused... we told them that we were putting down 9 grands on downpayment for a new mazda and we were serious..the manager wont let us test drive unless i showed him the money? what kind of bull**** is that..

So as I pulled up to the dealer, my roommate suggested to trick the dealership into thinking I was looking for a new car. This sounded fun, and I wanted to see how well the sales team would treat me, so I played along. I pulled up to the dealer pretty arrogantly; I nearly parked the 325 across 3 parking spaces Then I parked nicely...

We walked inside, the salesman greeted me, not from his desk, but actually stood up and came to greet me. Good. I told them my dad bought my new 3 series without my consent, and was looking to buy a different car I played them pretty well, told them it was REALLY nice of my dad to buy me a 325, but it wasn't what I was looking for. I was acting to be a modest rich kid and my roommate made me look arrogant by saying stuff like "yea he'll get a new car for Christmas" or "you know the Evo will be a nice addition".

So after quizzing the salesperson I was talking to about the Evo, I came to the conclusion that this man was pretty knowledgable about the Evo. Every question, whether very small or large in detail, he answered correctly, with a supporting statement. Well done Brad!

All this trickery went so well, that they even offered this "rich" 19 year old college student a test drive. Yes, even in this weather (we had about 6 inches of snow the past week). So I think I did well playing as a rich, yet modest 19 year old boy. And the salesman also did a good job being honest about the warranty policy and telling me CORRECT things about the Evo. I kinda feel bad about lying, but I had to say it was fun telling them my dad bought me that 325 without even telling me...

Oh, and if you're ever in Lafayette, IN or looking for a dealer to sell you an Evo at MSRP, talk to Brad Beliare of Bob Rohrman Mitsubishi. He knows his stuff (thoroughly quizzed) and he is a very nice guy to talk to. He's got an RS, Evo 9, and an Evo 9 MR in his showroom.

This has nothing to do with being frugal consumer taking advantage of a competitive economy.
heres my point: is a car salesperson a cashier, or a salesperson? if your answer is salesperson, then he/she should be obliged to help out ANY customer who walks into the store. i don't care if that person is lying about their income to test drive something out of their price range or not. they are there to SELL the product. not distribute it to whomever they see fit. also, like i said about cherry picking. thats not being a sales person. that is being a cashier. there is a big difference. and look at the good press this salesperson got for knowing his stuff. even though the kid who posted this had no intentions of buying, he inadvertantly advertised for the company by saying the salesman did know his stuff. because the salesman answered the questions and jumped through the hoops, people will read this and consider going there. so time is money, and helping out someone who didn't even plan on buying a car could have just made a sale for another future customer. i'm guessing you have no idea of what customer service is do you? it is to service customers. customers are people who step foot in your store, you treat any of them poorly, eventually it will bite you in the ***. you treat them well, good things happen. maybe in 2 years this kid who posted this finds an excellent job, and can afford an evo. maybe his experience with this dealer will make him remember, wow, even though i had no intentions of buying the car, the guy was nice, and knew his stuff. i'm going back there to buy my SL500 (or whatever it may be). think ahead and your company will prosper, think in the immediate and you will fail.

just like in any retail store out there, there are "Secret shoppers", they are fake customers paid to walk in and ask the salespeople questions about the product and they grade the salespeople. sometimes people are fired if they do a ****ty job ( i have seen it happen first hand). and that was from how they treated someone who wasn't even really going to buy something! do you think secret shoppers should all go to hell? they keep the sales people honest, and the word really does travel. it did right here.

I'm not debating any of that, but we are not obliged to let teenagers who don't have the ability to buy (or anybody, for whatever reason), - drive a car just because they want to. I could care less if you think its okay to lie about who you are and what your intentions are, but I don't have to get in a car with someone whom I don't feel is on the level or toss them the keys. He could be anything from just someone wanting a joyride, to a thief, to a murderer. Anybody who has done this for a reasonable period of time becomes pretty good at sniffing out BS. We get a suprise every now and then, for better or worse, but that's just life. There's also no set amount of time we have to spend with someone even if all they want to do is ask questions all day. Some people need more time then others, and you have to feel them out - but sometimes you have to cut them loose and move on to someone else.

Ha ha, WHATEVER. He only just recently went back and added the guy's name because of all the flack he's taken over this thread. He's main intention with posting this was NOT to glorify the guy for the good job he did.

i'm guessing you have no idea of what customer service is do you?
I'm guessing you should keep your assumptions about me to yourself. I don't know you, you don't know me, all we are discussing here is the context of this thread.

Again, you are making this into a bigger deal then it really is. Bobaab is not a secret shopper. It isn't his job to test the salespeople. This guy at that store probably doesn't need any practice. No one likes to be deceived and to be the butt of somebody's joke, especially when they are at their job trying to earn a living - I know you all would feel the same way. Why is this so difficult to understand?

Would anyone else find it really funny if someone posted that they already did this kind of thing at Fields Jeep. Maybe even to the poster. Then again my humor is sometimes not to everyone elses liking.

I work at a mits dealership and i get people all the time wanting to drive them, for the most part i can pick the honest ones out, but to be honest if its slow i really dont mind talking with someone even if they are just interested in the car and arent ready to buy.
To be totally honest i have done the same thing before on many cars, 350z, escalade and a few others. now i dont pretend to have $$ or anything, i just say i am in the market for a new car.

jeez leave the poor guy alone. Nothing wrong with having a little fun. i think it's funny what he did. i've always thought about it myself being a 19 year old college kid (for only 2 more days) and a future evo owner. plus with the way mitsu sales are going i don't think hes wasting anyones time. plus i'm sure the salesman loves to get out of the office for a while. i sell apartments and i never mind showing apartments to kids who aren't going to rent that day. but then again i do see your point

I test drive cars all the time. The smart sales man knows that getting you in that car is half the way to a sale. Today's looker is tomorrows buyer.

Bob, that's awesome, can't believe this generated so much attention on the board!

When I bought my Evo in '03 I was treated like crap by dealer after dealer who either wanted $2000 over MSRP, or looked at me and thought I was some dorky kid who wanted a test drive. I am a dork, a dork with a PhD. I never even got to test drive one until I bought my own. If I didn't want one so bad I would have been totally disgusted with the whole thing.

So good for you for turning the tables on the system and playing them like they play their customers EVERY DAY. Not that all car salesmen are scumbags, but I can't believe all you guys who are pissed at Bob ;-)

I work at Circuit City, and people such as yourself are known as "strokers". We have people that come in, ask 100 million questions, and then say "Thanks" and walk out. You learn to recognize them. They are usually poorly dressed, wearing anything Nascar, maybe some flanel. And not to stereotype but anyone asian is usually not there to buy. Also anyone speaking broken english is a huge tip off to a stroker.

I take my job seriously and I'm very knowledgable about the products I sell. I'm not just some stupid kid in an electronics store making **** up. We aren't even on commission and I take the time to educate BUYING customers.

Anyone else, go make a friend with the internet.

All in all, you sir, are an *******.

Wow, you are really off the mark there. The biggest sale I ever made at my old job was to an asian guy who wanted to buy stuff for his elderly father. Neither spoke english that well or dressed that well, but when they totaled the order (couple grand in electronics), he just smiled and asked if cash was ok!! This guy was walking around with a full money clip of 100 doallar bills.

holy hell man, like that is such a horrible event to happen. I worked a sales floor for a long time and got used to "strokers". You know that they are part of the job, and some come back. Believe it or not, "Let me think about it" is not always a blow off line. What bob did was completely within his rights and really didn't hurt anyone. Could the salesman have been making calls and mailings? yes, but was he? No, he was waiting around on the floor. Chill the hell out everyone. Questions, no matter what kind of car he thought you drove, are still questions from a future buyer. Maybe this little visit will make bob get his evo from this salesman. EVER THINK OF THAT? Imagine the comission that Bob will be giving this guy down the road.

Finally, I do agree with you that salesmen, on the whole, get a bad rep on the boards, but a some of the time they deserve it, (not always). Lies, ignorant statements, and all around dishonest behavior is not a rare thing in car sales. I wish it weren't that way. In fact, the guy I bought my lancer from was great and very honest, but the other dealerships I went to were far from that.

That's rather funny as asian people tend to save money and have a lot to spend if they decide to slurge. Over here a lot of the highly educated upper bracket are asian people and they are not shy about spending at all.
