HKS RS intake, how bad is it?
The NEW RS suction kit (called Racing Suction kit RELOADED) I believe might come with piping that does not need a tune. I've just bought one for my Sti (mainly for looks, I know it's sad) and the section of the pipe where the MAF sits is the same diameter to the stock unit and they've made a point of advertising this. [see "Option" magazine, Jan issue, page 42 if you read japanese]
I would wait till the 'reloaded' stuff becomes available in the US.
btw, as far as I am aware, the MAF error comes from the new pipe (on other kits) being a larger diameter than stock, so the MAF sees a slower air flow and thus the ECU will think that less air goes in to the engine (than the actaual value) which will casuse you to run lean. In some cases (home-made ones!) the centre of the sensor is on at the centre of the pipe and so the variation is ever worse.

I have never heard of anyone having foam peices inside the turbo or exhaust

Okay, earlier I said I got one for my Sti. And I did. I haven't been driving much lately, so about 300miles later, I decided to check out the filter and the piping... there was gray dust inside the pipe. It was where the flexible pipe meets the metal pipe, creating a step change in section so the dust was deposited. Now 300miles and there was a lot of dust. Like you can wipe your finger on it and it will leave a finger tip shaped clean patch. Admittedly, it IS dusty where I drive (pass). But 300 miles? I really fear for my turbo and engine...
Safe to say, it's now off the car and the stock intake is back on. So take it from me, it doesn't filter jack $hit.
I also have some quite interesting data from HKS if anyone wants to see it, I will send you the xls file.

i installed mine, turbo immediately spooled up faster.... just make sure you reset your ecu during the install. it works great.... added that and a catback with no tune and dropped 4 10ths in the 1/4 at the track... hks is great sometimes
i brought one, istalled it at 25,000 miles, drove to proven performance to get reflashed by dyno flash, changed the filter ever 5,000 miles. i now have 44,000 miles on my car. i have nerver personally had any problems.
I've had this intake for a long time, I have 47,000 miles, and no problems. I change my filter ever 5,000 miles roughly to be safe. I drove with this intake for months without a tune, without a problem. Once tuned however the car really responds well overall.
I personally wouldn't use this intake in a desert area such as midwest for causious reasons, cause the filter is very pourous.
There are pros and cons to any aftermarket part you put on your car... If your concerned at all, the stock airbox is known to be pretty good.
