yeah don't ever engine break, breaks are much cheaper then a transmission or worn clutches and the what not.

I don't think he meant downshifting to engine brake. I think he was just saying to lift off the throttle and let the engine pull off some speed as you enter a corner. If the ECU is holding revs, you gotta apply the brakes instead of just coasting down.

If you feel unsafe, take it out of gear or press in the clutch? If anything I can see this improving gas mileage for the people who suck at driving at consistent speeds.

Taking it out of gear or pumping the clutch does not work on my 9. The rpm's still drop slow until they reach 3000rpm's.

These methods are usless anyway when driving the car properly at speed. If you don't know why or what I'm taking about, please invest in an HPDE school.

This is normal, normal, normal. We've been talking about it since the 05s first came out.

Xtnct, it does not cause any problems when road racing whatsoever. I do threshold braking while in gear coming into hard turns, and it's no problem. It's more of a problem when coasting/cruising.

No, this has nothing to do with the flywheel. It's built-in by the ECU. I think the stock flywheel is around 17lbs, but I haven't weighed it. Hrm, actually, I have a burned out stocker in the garage, so I'll go weigh it.

i was wondering what was up w/ that. i kind of dig it, it's like a poor man's cruise control.

I think I agree with you based on my experience, I did not feel it get in the way either... but based on theory alone, when driving at speed, we would not really notice it as the brakes would overpower the slow dropping rpm's and force them down. This means the brakes are doing more work than needed (by having to not only slow the car but the engine too) taking away a percentage that could have been used to slow the car. Unless this slow drop turns itself off somehow at a certain brake pressure/brake position point???

Also, I don't like the feature from a safety perspective. Assume you loose your brakes for whatever reason (I experienced boiled fluid, broken piston caliper seal leaking fluid, all pad material gone so take your pick) and in these cases I had to rely on both the e-brake and the engine to slow down to safety before running out of room. I am predicting that with the lack of engine braking.... I would run out of room (don't want to test that theory though). For this reason, I would love to turn this slow engine rpm drop feature permanently off.

Right, that is the reason I asked if any tuners are able to flash it out just like removing the rev limit or boost cut....

Agreed. This tread is identical to this one, maybe it can be merged.

Wow I learned something from you. =) I alway wondered why my car did that.

Thanks!

So...the conclusion!
It is absolutly normal to rev slowly down...if u dont have a check engine!
The mitsu ecu has a feature: when the rev is higher or less then 100 rpms more then 10 seconds that the ecu tells it to make ... u will have an error (Idle speed control failure).
If u dont have that... Push it hard and wisely!

PS. Small OFFTOPIC for Warrtalon!
At my IX I have an ecutek tune set at 1.5 bar (21psi) overboost. The mods are in my sig.
Is it safer to rise it?
I have a friend with an VIII with phe 1.6 bar steady pressure until redline!!??!!...His mod is made by a rally tuner from Germany ...Getno. Is it safe??? For how long will it hold???
THX!
