Problem with sunroof

I'm trying to get some input on a problem I've had on occasion with my sunroof. A few times since I've owned my car the sunroof will intermittently not open. The glass will drop down but then it stops and will not slide back. I can close it and go to vent but when I try to open it full it just sticks. Usually a couple hours later it works fine. I know its not the safety feature as that would keep it from even droping down.
Has anyone else had this problem? I have the car at the dealer for another problem and of course the problem won't occur while they are looking at it. Hopefully someone else has had this problem and knows what to fix. Thanks for any help.

Dunno if this will help but I've seen "how to fix a stuck sunroof" in the DIY/ How to section a few times.

You may want to check there.

I appreciate the link and I've tried the search but mine is an INTERMITTENT problem. If my motor was screwed up or if the glass was off track it would happen all the time. I have no grinding or funny noises, the glass just drops in like it's suppose to but then it just stays there and the switch only moves it back to close.

Anyone else?

Yep - I get a similar issue.

I'm guessing the sun roof tracks must get dirty over time, adding friction which (and again I'm guessing) throws a sensor in the motor when it get's too much resistance.

I wonder if cleaning the tracks and sunroof suround would help?

i had the same problem, but when i got out and had a friend push on the button to slide it open to see if it was stuck on anything, you know what? when it got stuck it was actually the black rubber thing aroung the sunroof, it was getting jam while opening. some how you just got to clean the seals, make it so it wont be sticky and make it loose or slippery. thats how i got mines to work. if not then maybe your 's is a different situation.

Thanks Hang187 - makes perfect sense and of course, it's also the most obvious!

I guess some cleaning and maybe a little silicon lubrication will do the job.

Mine does the same.. at least this morning. What type of lube are we talking about to clean it etc? I kept on trying to put it up and down, then open, but it only goes a small crack then stops. Dang it, my first complaint with the new(to me) evo.

When mine starts to stick and/or squeek I rub the black outer seal down with vaseline and wipe off the excess. Seems to work for about 6 months or so before I need to do it again.

The seal ie the trim on the absolute outside ring on the roof? Would vaseline work on the tracks, or is there better things out there?

I was a helicopter mechanic for 6 years in the army. Every O-ring I ever put in calls for them to be coated with "petrolatum" (vaseline) before installation to avoid binding and to keep the rubber conditioned without breaking down the compounds, even when in contact with other petroleum products such as synthetic oils and greases. I'm sure there are other specialty products that do the job as well, but you probably don't have them laying around the house and they are probably more expensive as well.

Vaseline might work on the tracks but I believe Mitsubishi calls for a different grease for those as specified in your users's manual.

I lube up the seal with vaseline where the outer glass contacts rubber, as that is the place where it binds. When I first experienced the problem, the mechanic put some special grease on it...which worked for about a week then turned into like a glue and made the problem worse. I cleaned all that crap out with alcohol, applied a layer of vaseline, and re-apply every 6 months or whenever creaking/squeeking/binding starts to occcur. Problem solved.

My sunroof does the same thing....usually I just pull over and push down on the sunroof so the freakin thing goes makes it past the point of the roof where it's getting held up. Quite annoying. I think Mitsu just makes crappy sunroofs. I also don't think its an issue of clean tracks. I think humidty has something to do with it.
