Here's what you can try - I did this with a Subaru STi I was recently considering buying... (I want an Evo instead now. Please don't think less of me...
)
Call up the main Mitsubishi US customer service number. Tell them that you are buying a Lancer Evo used from a private party and that you want to find out about the warranty status and what parts if any will transfer to you. Tell them that you have heard that parts of the factory warranty might be voided if the car was in an accident or if certain modifications were done to it. Tell them you have the VIN. And politely ask if they have any way to check the warranty status of this car for you.
When I did this on the STi, the Subaru customer service rep was able to look up the VIN's service history with me on the phone and read off to me all the service notes on the car!! She said that the warranty was not voided but that the service history did have notes that could affect warranty service on certain parts. She went on to read all the notes entered by Subaru dealer techs that detailed every single aftermarket part on the car! - "No cats, downpipe, exhaust, brake rotors, brake pads, lowing springs, racing seats, rollcage (!?!), piggyback fuel controller,... etc. " - Which basically told me that, yes, Subaru would basically be able to deny pretty much any warranty claim at all on this car... (This STi had been advertised as stock!!!
)
Mitsubishi probably has a similar system. And their national customer service reps may be able to look up any mitsu's service record and warranty status for you. Give it a shot with your own VIN...

Find out the dealer that has serviced the evo and call them - that's what I did with my Evo and they told me all of the extensive work that was done to it - 4 oil changes.
some people around here work for dealers i have seen people check before just thought i would ask around and see... The reason i ask and ill try to make this as brief and painless as possible. It all started when my car had 23k miles on it i needed a clutch no questions asked of them to replace it under warranty i just said ok how much is the install and ill supply the parts. The dealer says ok. I ask them about the clutch im wanting to install and they say no problem it wont effect your warranty. I get them to install it and along the way they managed to f'uck my car up beyond belief. First of all the cut a 2x4 size hole in the bell housing then they hammered the intermediate shaft into the front diff backwards.. Cut the brackets that hold the steering setup to the car. and put sub standard bolts back in the pressure plate. 3 of the bolts broke off one slung into the bell housing cracking it in one section and the other 2 disappeared thru the magic hole in the bottom.... After my Transfercase was f'ucked by them hammering the shaft back into it they decided they didnt want to pay for it. I had just been layed off from my job so i couldnt afford a lawyer to fight it. I came to an agreement with the owner after numerous attempts @ pleading with the owner of the mitsubishi dealer yes i said dealer..... He finally agree'd to pay for it accepting no responsibility for the damages. After the car was fixed right... or so i had thought @ the time. The starter then stripped the teeth off the flywheel and destroyed itself.... also in the meantime the steering wheel fell off in my lap while driving down the road.... Finally i go to another dealer because the previous 2 had gone out of business... Now the 2nd dealer claimed no responsibility for the new damages that werent there before.... They agree'd to fix it but had said my car basically had been red flagged... this was the last time that my car has been to a dealer and since i have done everything to it... 30k miles later... Did my 2nd clutch myself with no real issue's but this whine i have had that could be tire related or its the rear diff not sure which is getting worse... My warranty is due to run out in about 10,000 more miles so i thought i would see if i could get this taken care of before that happens.... Which i highly doubt they will considering my warranty has been useless on my 99.9% stock car.... Drop in, Dyno flash, ACT clutch thats it......
I had taken my '03 in for a vibration and the service rep pulled the last eight numbers off the vin.As I'm standing there he says that the car had two previous owners and they would need to dig around a little more to determine if the warranty would be valid.That would tell me that they keep records somehow.
