5th gear grind and Dealer scare tactics

I have a 2003 evo 8 with 27k miles on it. I have a slight grind when i shift into 5th gear. This is covered under warranty right? I also KNow there is a TSB for this problem. I have changed my clutch to a very harsh 6 puck unsprung clutch good for 650 lbs of tourque. Can this be the cause of my grind or void my warranty? The dealer says that if its my fault then i need to pay 1.8k to fix the tranny. What should I do? What should I say to the service manager? I think he wants to blame me for it.

i had a similar problem in reverse, apparently 5th and reverse share the same syncro if you have a 5 speed. I have a IX.

They fixed it with no complaints. Of course this was HB Mitsu and I have no mods.

they might try to blame it on the clutch...even though its not really connected

but im suprised you asked. after all, with teh evo the added weight of you sitting in teh car and driving it is enough to void your tranny warranty. you see the added stress of the extra weight put unneccesary strain on the tranny which caused it to fail. its your fault and your stuck

Good luck man trying to get your evo fixed. They will notice that you have an aftermarket clutch and they probably won't cover the synchros under warranty.

its probably not ur fault for the gear grinding...but the clutch does put a little more stress on the tranny....and even at lenient dealerships they will tell you that aftermarket parts directly related to things that fail will not be covered....so maybe u should pick up a used stock clutch, get that thrown in for 400-500$ then while they are fixing the tranny ask the dealer to put the aftermarket clutch back in....i've read quite a few people doing that...

good luck!

If they won't cover it, you can try changing the fluids. Don't pay the dealer for repair, if you need it fixed send to shep or tre, they are cheaper, and will upgrade tranny.

Your screwed, unless your dealership is really cool. I went thru 6 months of bs with them for my 5th gear on my 2003 and i had the stock clutch. Eventually i just said **** it, and took the transmission out myself and sent it to TRE.

You can always do a sheptrans rebuild for 880. For now, are you double clutching at least to save the gear? That works for quite a while.

my 03 tranny is getting rebuilt under warranty, otherwise i would pull it out and send to tre .. except I have a horrible grinding noise when letting off the gas in any gear tsb covers it and I wont have to pay anything for mits problems

Not honoring warranty requests (not just modified Evo's) is the big problem with Mitsubishi. This is a well known cost saving tactic from them, and did cost them a considerable amount of lost sales. With this being said, your chances are slim if you modified your car. As a general rule of thumb, if you modified your car, and you have problems, you should remove the mods before taking it to the dealer, or just pay for the fix from a non-dealership (so your VIN doesn't go on file as a altered vehicle).
