Brembo, Generally.
Hey guys,
I have not yet bought my Evo, but still researching (may wait for the X, God willing). However, I wanted to ask about the Brembo brakes. I have searched and found that most threads were not opinionated but rather instructions (mostly about how to repaint them).
I wanted to ask how you guys felt about the brakes. Some say they are over-hyped. Some say they are worth the price. They are used on BMW's, Lamborghinis, Porsche uses them to produce their custom brakes, so I was thinking there must be something good about them. If you chose to change to a different brand, why, and which?
Opinions?
Additionally, whats the deal with the different colors. Do all evos come with a stock Brembo color? I see some variation.
Finally, I was wondering how you guys thought Brembos would work on a car thats not fitted with them stock. Im specifically asking about my SLK, since I am considering (apprehensively) fitting them in (almost purely for aesthetic appeal).

As far as the evo's brakes go, I think they are incredibly good with the right pads. I doubt 99% of evo owners ever use them to their full potential. I personally could care less whether they change color, as long as they work well.
For the SLK, I wouldn't waste your time. They are awefully expensive for just better looks.

Brembo are excellent brakes, the best thing is if u want more stopping power jus change the brake pads to performance pads.
They are the best unless ur really serious about auto-x or if u are packing some serious power.
Usually they come on Evo's painted red, unless someone changes the color- ( i think they come in red
). They are not over-hyped, they are damn good brakes. Doesnt the SLK come with high performance braking? Mercedes isnt gonna slap some korny brakes on their cars

Evo's have the red brembos...I think the sti's have the gold brembos
as far as being hyped...not really. I think most of the "ricer" community is into different colored or repainted brakes along with all the slotted and crossdrilled stuff just for show.
But they are excellent brakes. At first I thought they would too much bite compared to my old civic...but they are very smooth in engaging and very responsive to me.
Going on the downhill that has a pretty sharp turn at the bottom on a local highway, my old civic, and pretty much any other car I drove always exhibited some brake fade at the bottom of the hill and turn. Brakes felt like mush since you needed to stay on the brakes on the entire slope to keep speeds under control.
In the Evo, you can do the same, but there is still plenty of bite, no fade. It inspires a lot of confidence. As mentioed by another poster...they do feel squishy when you are light on the pedal...but they are there should you every really need them.
Several magazines raved about the brakes, their stopping ability and their ability to resist fading over hard use.
Another trademark line that I kept getting from people was "what are those red things in your wheels"

Car magazine after car magazine has rated the Evo brakes as "excellent" in all regards, and the objective stopping distances are world-class. I love mine.
(Funny enough, though, my RX-8's stopping distances and control were virtually as good, even though they were standard one piston jobs, albeit with huge rotors.)
I would not spend the money to buy these brakes separately, but as part of the Evo purchase price they are a great inclusion. I also love their looks.

I currently have an STi...(gold brembos)...the few times I've called upon them to slow me down in a hurry they have more than done the job...they aren't really touchy...they don't make you feel like you are driving a race car...they work amazingly well but retain a normal brake feeling which is nice
I agree with Rod Munch...unless you track your car or have tons of power I'd never spend the money to put these brakes on a car...but I sure won't complain about having them

Depending on how you drive.
For your SLK, changing brake pads should do the trick.
For me I go to the track often and I actually burned my brake pads and brake fluid. So like others have mentioned the Brembo brakes are up to the task of hard driving and track use. It's the pads and the brake fluid that needs to be upgraded.
The color fading is due to the heat generated from the hard use and the clear coat peeling off.

The brembo brakes are almost as good as the stock Advans for shear stopping distance. Without the Advans, the brembos will overpower any other tire (aside from an all out race tire) you can put on the car. They are also very fade resistant as others have mentioned. They get my thumbs up for a street/track car. Pads can help, but the calipers are plenty good with very good modulation.
Brembo makes many models of brakes so comparing a low end Brembo (like the Evo stockers) with a Porsche kit or Brembo Gran Turismos is not a fair comparision. Other manufacturers also have different product lines so if your comparing Brembo to something else (AP, Alcon, StopTech, etc.) you have to make sure you are making an apples to apples comparison.
For street use the stockers are great. For track use you'll have to change fluid and pads, maybe lines. For heavy track use with R compound tires or slicks you'll want to upgrade the brakes, at the very least, the rotors. The stockers do not float. But for not too much more money than a good set of floating rotors you can get some Stop Techs.

Its good to hear that you guys like your brakes. Indeed, all I have to change are my brake pads (my brakes are great overall), but I was very interested in Brembo (it's been a dream to have them on my car for a long time). Albeit I have absolutely no idea how to go about buying them, and the warrantee will probably disappear along with them.
i love mine, stop on a dime. i have never come close to rear ending someone but tons of people swirve to miss me cause i can stop so quick. i am going to put brembos on my mustang now after getting used to them and then getting in the mustang and not being able to stop as well......
brembos are more than enough, the super hardcore switch over to stoptech though...theyre slightly better...but seriously...its not worth all that unless you're mario andretti
