We reach about 140/150 km per hour (I'm not sure what that is MPH. 80? 85 maybe?) and at that point we maintain our speed and stick in the left lane. My buddy is following me the whol time. Eventually we merge to the far rigth lane to get onto another highway, and as we are making a turn, 2 cop cars pull up right behind us and throw on their lights. They cuff us both and charge us for "street racing".

Apparently one of them was an undercover who was behind us at the light. And he then called backup.

This is the short version of the story, and it is exactly what happened. Now I am faced with having to fight this. If I lose, my car will be DESTROYED.

I was not racing, as I was simply going home with my friend. I will get a lawyer, but I just want to know if you guys think I will have a problem fighting this given the information I have given you. If we were really racing wouldn't we be trying to evade each other, going as fast as possible? Who races behind one another and maintains a constant speed???

That sucks man, but given the way cops are cracking down on imports now I'm not really suprised.

What was the speed limit 55/65? If anything you could admit in traffic court that you were speeding but not racing. If the courts are setup there like here, then if you don't like the results in traffic court you could always appeal and it gets sent to circuit court. There your lawyer can deal with a prosecutor instead of just the cop. Alot of traffic stuff gets downgraded in circuit court because they also deal with the more important crap like drug busts, murders, etc...Also when you appeal any decision that the traffic court judge handed down (i.e. jail time) gets suspended until your case gets heard in circuit court. Good luck

Their laws are so ridiculous that if you live in another state, the local government will pay it for you. Consider yourself lucky, but sorry about the car.
Actually the law is 20mph over the speed limit or anything over 80. I really agree with the 20 mph b/c going 40 in a 15 or 50 in a 25 which are usually school zones or residential areas is wreckless.

It isn't that the laws are ridiculous. The local government here is trying to promote a safe environment for people to take their families for summer vacations. Its been getting stricter over the years because of what happens at the clubs/bars they have along the strip, not because of racing.

What do you mean by "the local government will pay it for you"?

Thanks again for the support guys. I'm confident I'll win, but now I'm just really sad to know that the job I have right now will basically be going to pay lawyer fees for the rest of the year (and car payments). I wanted to see my girlfriend in Japan and now I'm not going to be able to. I wish cops knew how badly they can screw people's lives up...
Western, but before that, I lived in the hammer a while back when I was going to high / grade school.... Well actually I live near cayuga... If you ever went to the Drag strip *cough* toronto raceway (which is an hour and a half away from toronto) *cough*... then you probably passed my house haha.

It's cool that I have like 10 minute access to the 1/4 mile and a track.

Gee, didn't see this one coming. Was tempted to ask why you were asking for legal help from the get-go since it was obvious that your mommy and daddy would bail you out.

On a related note, isn't it pretty pathetic to have to rely on your parents to bail you out of your own stupidity when you are 22 years old? At what age are you planning on taking care of yourself?

Leave him alone lol. You never know. He could be seriously financially unstable right now.

Sorry for the confusion. I meant that the state you live in will take care of everything for you from what I've heard. New Jersey cops have got to be the worst though, and no laws are as strict as Virginia's. I like Cali. Big, huge, open roads/lanes. Everyone drives 85+ mph on the freeway, and the cops don't really even give a ****. Florida is comparable to Cali, but the cops actually chase you down haha.

Bottom line, they were speeding, but they weren't racing and it's lame to hit them with an additional charge.
Exactly! The court ultimately has the power to decide what the charges are, if any, not the cops.

Dude, lay off him.

First of all, how can you say it was "obvious" that mommy and daddy would bail him out? Where did he mention that he was going to go run to mom and dad to get out of it? If he was planning on doing that all along, why even bother with starting this thread?

Second, it looks like mom OFFERED to pay the court costs and such, not that he went crawling to her for the bail out. He can't be faulted for her offering her help. If he asked her to pay it, not only could I see you having the reaction you did, I would also agree 100%.

Third, what stupidity is he guilty of that you haven't committed yourself? 2am, you're with your friends and you all have fast cars, there's no traffic and a nice long stretch of freeway on the way home; if you don't at least get on it for a little while on that road in that situation, you need to turn in your Evo and buy a Ford Focus or something.

Yodo: I have NEVER had a traffic ticket in my life. My insurance rates are lower than anyone I know because of this.

I get scholarships to schools, and when I studied in Japan last year every cent of it was paid for by the Japanese government. On top of that I now work at a bank to pay for the monthly payments on my car. I strictly told my Mom I WOULD NOT let her pay for the charges, because it was my own stupidity that got me in trouble and I will just have to take every extra penny I earn and use it to pay the legal fees. She refused to let me pay, because I have been a damn good son and I've made her proud. **** you if you're jealous. I worked hard every day of my life for everything I have and I will continue to do so. I never expected a cent from my parents in this matter. I feel sorry that you can't understand what it's like to have a good relationship with your family.

Evo2k6: Thank you. But Yodo has been a complete ******* to me ever since I joined this forum, from before I owned an Evo. He obviously has some kind of emotional problems and has to try to attack people personally over the net just to put a twisted smile on his face.

Again, As 2K6 said, for the people who are saying "You were being an idiot". I guess you don't have other buddies who are into cars, and I guess you never cruise together with them and sometimes get a bit carried away going too fast. Face it, we buy these cars because we love boost and sometimes it can get addictive and we get carried away, especially when there's no one around.

I wasn't driving through a school zone at 3 pm, it was extremely late and I wanted to get home.

Well hey man. You do what you have to do. There are *******s on here, but the majority like to help people out. Good luck with everything alright? Don't stress it. You have a very logical argument.

I don't think this guy has any friends if he is razzing on someone for the stupidest reasons. Jealously takes the lead role here. Anyway Eggy. Just ignore the SOB. He's doing nothing but pissing you off.
