If you had a job to do and this was part of it wouldn't you do your job?

Well hey, nobody has to know you let a speeder go. You get paid regardless of how many people you pull over, or am I sadly mistaken?

We reach about 140/150 km per hour (I'm not sure what that is MPH. 80? 85 maybe?) and at that point we maintain our speed and stick in the left lane. My buddy is following me the whol time. Eventually we merge to the far rigth lane to get onto another highway, and as we are making a turn, 2 cop cars pull up right behind us and throw on their lights. They cuff us both and charge us for "street racing".

Apparently one of them was an undercover who was behind us at the light. And he then called backup.

This is the short version of the story, and it is exactly what happened. Now I am faced with having to fight this. If I lose, my car will be DESTROYED.

I was not racing, as I was simply going home with my friend. I will get a lawyer, but I just want to know if you guys think I will have a problem fighting this given the information I have given you. If we were really racing wouldn't we be trying to evade each other, going as fast as possible? Who races behind one another and maintains a constant speed???

ok good, you got a lawyer. good. I am in Jax, NC and I almost got f-d with this same ****, but from what I am to understand unless they caught you in the act and can prove it, or if you confess to it, then you are f-d, but nothing elses. they can't say you might have been, or they thinkyou were.

Yep you may get paid, but you may not get paid for long if you're not doing anything while on duty. It's just like any other job.

You're obviously going to be doing your job during the day, but who pulls people over at night when the road isn't very busy at all.

It makes me happy to discuss facts and not some "what if" situation that may or may not have a firm basis in reality.

As it stands, the OP and his buddy were doing ~150% the speed limit and got caught. The OP's reason for exceeding the maximum posted speed so greatly was cleverly stated as a desire to get home - hardly a life or death situation. The OP also said that he'd be happy living in a culture where personal transportation isn't required, which speaks volumes about his automotive orientation and his possible rationale for purchasing an Evo. You'll have to excuse me if I choose not to shed crocodile tears for some poseur whose current claim to fame seems to revolve around a comically false sense of persecution due to his choice of vehicle.

Night shift, people looking for drunk drivers or other people breaking the law.

Alright. No more arguing. I have class in the morning at 7, and it's 12:24 A.M. Eastern U.S. time. So I'm going to get some sleep. You guys have a nice discussion. Later.

Sure, drunk drivers, but why non-drunk speeders? Anyway, I really need to go now.

you can use the argument that these cars can go 160 mph, so if you were actually racing, you'd be going a heck faster than 85 mph. even Geo metro can do 85 on the high way.

I am serious about going to Japan if this gets any worse than it already has though. I'm done with cars after this experience because I am now afraid of getting in more trouble. Cops are too corrupt these days and new laws are being made every day to make it harder and harder for us enthusiasts to enjoy our cars on the streets.

Judging by your description you are liable for a speeding ticket and nothing else. In the US at least, they will need more evidence than following you to charge you with racing. Undercovers here work like undercover prostitutes in that they need to lure you in, either by talking or "displaying horsepower." That has been my interpretation of the law, but depending on the court, judge, and cop the term "law" can be quite relative. I cannot imagine canada is any different though. your lawyer should have no trouble distinguishing "speeding" and "racing."

Really sorry about that though. that is incredible. A word of advice though- never discuss legal matters online, i assure you if they are as strict as you say, they monitor websites like this

I appreciate it. Well I'm being truthful about my actions so they can quote me saying I wasn't racing all they like. If I was lying about it and asking you guys how to fabricate a good lie that wouldn't be too smart

Actually, 2 of my friends were revving their engines at the light before I got onto the highway, but one of them went on a different road while the other one followed me. Obviously those two were not racing, or else... they would have been going at it on the SAME road lol.

Meh. My Mom is being really cool about this whole thing and she says she'll pay for everything, because this is the first time I have been in a situation like this in 22 years.

Still, I have absolutely no passion or urge to drive the Evo quickly anymore. That alone is pretty damn depressing. In fact every time I pass by a cop now I feel sick, because I am paranoid they're going to pull me over.
