Differences between MIVEC and non-MIVEC Evos'...

Hey guys, I'm in the market for a new Evo. I am considering the Evo 9, but have a few concerns about the the variable valve timing motors.

Now, for those that have owned or have experience with both 8's and 9's, what would you say has the best performance for a daily commuter? I really like the new MR's, but might go with am older MR.

I drove an MR when they were 1st released, and was quite impressed with the factory performance. Haven't had a chance to drive a brand new one, so instead I am asking your thougts, opinions, etc.

Also, one last thing. Do the new ones respond well to mods just like the older ones?

Thanks!

I have a IX MR for my daily driver and I love it. With the MIVEC you are able to make more power easier than the VIII with just bolt-ons and a tune. Bolt-ons plus tune on IX equals bolt-ons plus cams plus tune on VIII. Not exactly but you get the idea. I would say the IX is sweet for this reason. I like the seats in the IX better than the VIII MR as well. To each his own.

Some guys are hitting 11's for well under $1000. 12's are possible with just a good boost controller and a good launch.

If you have to save money to get the IX then do it.

I had both viii and now ix. IX feels mechanically more refined. of course, i don't have cams like viii.

Produced similar peak pwrs after modds, but for DAILY drive IX wins hands down. Car launches quicker, less hesitation, fatter pwr band, torquier. Only downside, viii felt more raw like a racer, I kinda miss it...

+1 spyderx. my friend has an 8 MR and i have the IX MR---the IX is definetly more refined than the 8 and more useuable as a daily driver due to the mivec's better throttle respone down low.

Go with the IX. I had an VIII and got the IX. Like everyone said you will make more power with basic bolt ons. IMO everything just feels better and refined on the IX. Don't really know why I made this post since it was al said already but owell

No question, hands down, the VIII is far superior (only because I own one) - from what everyone says on this thread, I wish I had waited for the IX.
