Smile De-Cat Pipe? Worthwhile?

Hi everyone,

I've just bought an Evo 7 and was wanting to take the CAT out of the exhaust. I've done this with previous cars but never a turbocharged one. Is this an easy worthwhile first mod?

We have the added bonus here is the Isle of Man of no MOT! Yipee! (Also no speed limit in certain areas)

Thanks,

Dave.

it will give you a few more fingers of power. but some people argue that ruining the environment isnt worth the 2-3hp gain from running a test pipe instead of a high flow cat

apexi has a super cat (called a super decatalizer or something like that)...it's supposed to be just like a test pipe but its a high flow cat

In my case, I noticed a significant difference when I switched over to a test pipe on my 1.8T Passat and on my Evo VIII MR RS. Butt dyno says car accelerates faster. If you want something REALLY noticeable, install a full 2.75" turboback (given that you're running a 9.8T turbo like mine, a 3" might be overkill).

A next worthwhile mod would be a mail-in reflash (US$52), and for that you will need a Tactrix cable (US$90). After that, enjoy!

Its called a test pipe. Most of us run a TBE w/o the cat. You will gain hp but also de-cork the exhaust so exit flow will be increased. Yes it is a good mod.

If CATs are illegal to remove (and only a visual inspection) here you go:

I agree a TBE would be better (as well as a flash). However, I disagree that a 2.75 is better for the 9.8 hotside - a 3in is not overkill, its the standard. 3.5-4in may be overkill on stock type turbos though...

Sorta - its like any industry literacy/diction.

Test pipe (TP) is the replacement for the CAT in the section between the down pipe from the turbo outlet/O2 housing (DP) and the cat-back (CB).

TBE - means Turbo Back Exhaust - basically DP, TP, CB all in 3 letters... (TBE > DPTPCB - its just easier to say/type)

TBE stands for Turbo Back Exhaust. So basically we're talking about an aftermarket exhaust setup from the turbo back to the tail pipe.

Ok cheers guys, that cat is getting ripped off for fun!

I'll eat dolphin safe tuna from now on, contribute to the protection of the environment in a different way.
