Chalk it up on the board full of these. Another statistic I guess.

I am sick for u man SICK!!!!!!!!!! I wrecked my 04 RA like 1 1/2 months ago (GOT IT FIXED THEN TRADED IT IN ON MY GTS HEHE) got caught in a ice storm and slid into the back of a brand new 2007 tahoe and i wanted to puke. But i have almost died twice in my first two cars at age 16 and 17 I had not one but two 1984 Z28's both v8 sticks 1st one I tee boned an F350 on the interstate doing like 90+ mph (540 spin)and 2nd i was working under the hood and leaned on throttle linkage and bent it slightly(but had no idea) and went to the gas station down the road on the way back I nailed 1st gear threw it into 2nd and then 3rd went to let off the gas and the car just kept wright on going and hit a tree head on going I dont know how fast!!! The point is, it was almost 10 years since my last wreck not including my RA slick road mishap but ,I took something with me from those first two wrecks (yes it took two i was a teenager) U MUST RESPECT THE CAR THE ROAD AND THE PEOPLE ON IT INCLUDING UR SELF I am nots saying that anybody didnt but i didnt at one time and now i do. I hope that u take something from ur wreck and thank god himself that u and ur gf are ok! Glad u are ok to .

really sucks to hear. Hope you bounce back and get back into another Evo. Go out to a track and learn how to drive your Evos guys. Learning how to "drive" may save your car/life one day.

yeah, sorry to hear about the car man! It's just a good thing you guys are ok! And I feel ya on sliding out. I had the same experience about a year ago where I was going around a turn quickly and caught some unexpected dirt/sand from a tractor crossing. Fortunately for me i just slid into the ditch and had minor damage. I've taken my car(s) to numerous track/solo events but there's always something that will suprise you. Hopefully your insurance will take care of you. Good luck in the future man!

In reply to a bunch of the recent posts:

Yeah its crazy weird how easily it gave out in the back. I'm sure so many of you guys have come out of corners undle throttle or even throttle after straighening out of a corner with no problems at all. Circumstances must have been just right for it to happen the way it did, especially since the turn was so slight from the get go anyway. Check out one of my above posts about where to look for the turn in Google Earth or maps.google.com if you haven't already. You'll laugh at how pathetic the bend is.

Thanks guys again for the positive comments. I'm pretty sure I'll end up getting something new as long as insurance stuff works out in my favor. Maybe it will, maybe it won't - only time will tell, just gotta be patient. I know so many of you might flame me for this - but an '07 STi is looking better and better after some research and some time spent reading on NASIOC. Subies seem safer than Evo's in general - what with the high crash test ratings and the symmetrical AWD system that is different from an Evo's system. Oh well - I don't want to start an Evo/STi debate - they're both awesome cars and I much prefer an Evo, but oh well.

Keep em coming guys. This is turning into a formidible thread - fellow readers and Evo owners can learn alot from my story and these comments.

Quote: yeah, hindsight is 20/20. If your backend gave away in a narrow road going 50mph, are you sure you'd be able to keep mental composure to make perfect decisions about how to correct an out of control car? I sure couldn't. I guess its inexperience.
Actually that is it exactly. I am not trying to flame you, but to be honest, if you would have taken your car to an AutoX and learn what happens when you loose your rear and how to correct it, you might of been able to possibly have a curb rashed wheel at worst from this incident.
Whatever car you get next, I highly suggest taking your car to an event where you can practice basically loosing control. I remember the first time I was in a RWD, I took a turn to fast, started to loose the rear, and basically did the same thing you did, try to correct and apply the brakes. I ended up spinning around and making it worse. I learned my lesson on what to do, and only costed me a bent wheel.

I would be willing to bet a large part of your problems came not from your driving but, from being on BFG KDW's and not KDWS's. They are KDW's not KDWS's right?

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/bfg/bfg.jsp

KDW's are a summer tire. KDWS's are an all season tire. Why they choose that naming convention IDK.

Summer tires with almost freezing temps that night in Montclair and I'd say that was your biggest problem. No need to call BFG and complain now. The stock Advans are the same way and have bit quite a few other owners.

According to BFGoodrich's website, you are completely wrong.

http://www.bfgoodrichtires.com/bfg/productIdSubmit.do

In the overview tab there are at least 3 times that state that the tires can handle wet conditions and keep traction in rain and whatnot. See for yourself in the link.

"Benefit: Confident wet traction
Feature: Deep, wide grooves help speed water evacuation and reduce hydroplaning"

and...

"Benefit: Excellent wet and dry grip (UTQG traction grade=AA)
Feature: Silica-reinforced tread compound"

and...

"Benefit: Enhanced wet grip in shallow water depths; excellent treadwear for an ultra-high performance tire
Feature: Flat/oval footprint"

All from the website. So, what are you talking about man?

I know, thats what I was saying

But I remember reading on here that someone said the crash beam is "only good for fender benders under 5mph", but who knows if that is actually true.

sucks man.

I guess i'm the only one that thinks your gearing selection was bad

50 -> 40 mph I woulda shifted down to 3rd at least. To have some torque under my foot. seems like punchin it in 4th at 40 wouldn't benefit you traction wise -at all

Did you read the tirerack description?

It categorizes the tire as a SUMMER tire. Almost freezing is not SUMMER weather regardless of wet or dry. I'm sure the water didn't help but it was more the temperature I was talking about.

From tirerack for KDW2 and KDW:

Like all summer tires, g-Force T/A KDW-2 tires are not intended to be driven in near-freezing temperatures, through snow or on ice.
