5th gear noise
5th gear noise
so i have read about the 5th gear grind that people experience. and 2 days ago i started getting a noise when i go into 5th quickly. however when i ease it in i have no problems. it isnt so much of a grind as it is a clunking noise. any input on the issue would be appreciated.
thanks
thanks
I have this same exact problem. If I don't shift into fifth gingerly I get a small amount of grind. After doing some reading on other posts I've come to the conclusion that it is the synchro. My car only has 13k miles on it and I was not expecting to get the grind so soon. I don't track my car nor do I drag it. I do sometimes take off in a spirited manner from a stoplight.
I have resigned myself to wait until it becomes worse and then put all my stock parts back on before I take it to the dealership.

I have the exact same problem. My grind started a few months ago - and only when shifting quickly into 5th gear during hard acceleration. If I shift gently, then the grind isn't evident. I searched for about an hour yesterday and have concluded that it is the 5th gear synchros (for which there was a TSB issued). Granted, I have a little over 60,000 miles on my car so it has held up pretty well. I, like you, have never launched or raced my car - just spirited acceleration. I'm going to take it in to the dealer this summer and hopefully get it replaced under warranty. If they refuse, or if they don't succeed in fixing it, I very well may send my tranny to Shep and have them rebuild it for under $1K.
Other possible causes for the notorious grind are 1) clutch not disengaging all the way (adjust clutch pedal) 2) wrong tranny fluid. I myself use Royal Purple. Others would swear by Pennzoil Synchromesh as a remedy for the grind.

That 5th gear grind...
I had the exact same symptoms in a 04 GSR. The good...if it's under warrantee mitsu tends to take care of this if your dealer is there for you. The bad...I believe that this is caused because there is no reverse lockout on the EVO 5spd trannys. So, that 5th gear grid is your synchro...and it will only get worse if you ignore it. Bump to they guy who said to change the fluid...do it immeadiately and the slicker the fluid the better...I had the dealer change the fluid and they ended up picking up the whole deal on a warrantee claim. I like Royal Purple products or Redline if you diy.
FYI stop the grind before it's time...
It turns out that my clutch in my GSR was sticky and would not disengage. The problem is fixed with a better clutch, removing that little blocking device in the line from the clutch to the slave cylinder. Everyone knows that beating on an EVO with launches will fry a clutch, as with any high perf. / high torque. This has definitely been a problem for some people with sticky clutches and a missing lock-out for the mitsu 5spd tranny.
Note to self:
if buying 5spd EVO...
- new tranny fluid
- new SS line ( or just remove the plastic piece )
- new entire (upgrade) clutch assembly
or
- new tranny until all of the above done at lease once
You my friends have found the weakest link! =)
