18 year old kid....new Evo IX....first time driving stick...BAD COMBO!!

Okay, so I am at the dealership today getting an oil and filter change and 4-wheel alignment and I overhear a couple of guys talking about some 18 yea old boy they sold a new black Evo IX to not very long ago. I guess the kid bought the car with some inheritance money and did not even have a clue how to drive stick when he bought it. So the kids Dad drives it for a while and finally it is the sons time to shine. He takes out his nice new Evo IX for the first time by himself. This is where things go horribly wrong. Evidently Junior Speedracer tries to race someone in an area where two lanes go down to one. He goes flying off of the road, hits a fence post, scrapes the entire passenger side of the car on something while he was in the process of leaving the roadway, takes out both passenger side wheels and hits some sort of boulder that caves in the rocker panel and PUTS A HOLE IN THE FLOORBOARD that is over a foot long!! That's right!! You can see daylight from inside the car looking straight through the floor onto the ground. He also took out the intercooler, complete exhaust system, front bumper, fender, and undertrays. All told...in the neighborhood of $12,000 in damage to a new Evo that had barely 3,100 miles at the time of the accident. The kid emailed his salesmen and asked him about performance parts to make the car faster the same day he dropped it off for all of the bodywork. Why he thinks he needs more speed is beyond me. The light at the end of the tunnel is that the kids Dad said, 'No way am I turning this in to insurance. You are paying all $12,000 out of your pocket,' and is making the kid pay all cash on his own. You should have seen this poor car. Tons of damage, and it looks like it has never been washed since the day it was new. It was just plain sad.

Wow I don't get it. Definately right about young drivers. You try not to discriminate age with performance cars but the statistics don't like. I know I can look back on how I drove my first car Nissan 200sx and I wouldn't even think to pull half the stunts I did with that thing. Thank GOD it was slow.

If you added the horsepower up rom my first three cars it would probably still not be equal to the Evo. That simple math might be a big reason that I am still alive.

he got off quite lucky that its only 12k in damages...seems like it should be quite a bit more than that...adn about the age thing...im pretty sure there was a 30 year old guy that just killed himself street racing...i dont consider that a young guy

street racing is stupid in any case and should never happen i dont care if you are older or younger...just because the kid was young doesnt mean the same thing wont happen to an older guy who decides to be stupid and run his evo off the road. There is no comment that could prove to me otherwise

amscrazy I was just stating that they're more likely to do this. No one is leaving out the older guys. I've seen plenty of them do stupid s****.

yea irresponsible on the part that they should know whether or not their kid can handle the responsibility. Im 17 and i drive an Evo daily, but my parents know im a very responsible person and i learned to drive the car for about 8 months before my dad handed me the keys and said it was mine. And i promise each and every member of Evom.net that i never have, never will, race anyone on the street. it will be at a track under controlled conditions. i plan on doing some auto-x or maybe some time attack events for fun, kinda like a father son weekend. But i assure you i drive slower than my friends that have slow cars, and i rarely ever use the power unless i find it entirely appropriate, which is rare.

Dont get me wrong though, young drivers are f'ing stupid. Parking in the school parking lot for a week put a dent in my car from some dumba**, but ive since found a better spot. And i notice every other kid that has a decently fast car is completely irresponsible with it, whether its a mustang, civic, 335i, or my best friends STi, who happens to have 3 tickets vs. my 0, yes, not one ticket. Ive been challenged before, but i know its not worth it, i dont need to prove I have bigger *****, cause i know my car does.

Ill go out on a limb and say im also 18 and driving an evo, albeit used and not brand new. Ive never street raced in it, gotten a speeding ticket in it, or gotten in an accident in it (or any other car). I guess people with common sense and self control are the minority these days.

Stop generalizing ppl. I got my evo when I was 17 and I'm still alive. It was my first car and guess what; I didn't know how to drive stick. After three years, I have yet to get a speeding ticket, accident, and is still driving with my stock clutch at 40,000 miles with 330whp.
