I'm sad to say I can't help on this one anymore, since I sold my Evo, I've become a right-lane gas-sipper

Pruis (actually I average about 50mpg):

Saab:

both cars have daily commutes, and I only have to fill up 2 times a month...

When I drive my dad's A4, I always play with the instant MPG display. WOT 5mpg, cruise at 85mph at 5% throttle, 90mpg I wish the Evo had one. I know at times I've been able to cruise between 40-50MPG for miles on the highway.

I'm not a big fan of all the bells and whistle of luxery cars, but one of those MPG display's is nice to have in ANY street car.

The best way to the BEST MPG I've found is go as fast as you can, with as little throttle as possible. This only works on LONG straight back roads or highways. For instance, get up to about 80-90mph and keep it at steady enough throttle to manitain speed. You'll cover more ground in shorter period of time, using less fuel. Going fast doesn't really mean you'll get poor MPG, it just matters on mostly throttle position. RPM's do come into play but not nearly as much as throttle position.

my story

Used to get 160-180 to the tank when i first got my car, after I replaced the stock clutch for somehow i began to get 200 to light some times 220. now that I am tunning it I hope to get a consistent 220 to the light. I am going to get a WB display so that I can stay on closed loop at ~14.7 most of the time - really alot more useful than a boost gauge.

WB display = Useful for saving gas and not blowing you engine.
Boost gauge = just a sexy factor.

MPG depends on the road condition and how you drive.
Every day, I drive traffic congested downtown LA and it is like 15 MPG.
Then, when I was away in orange county for a while ( driving free of traffic mostly on freeway). My MPG went up and I couldn't believe--- almost 28 MPG!

well i dunno if it all had anything to do with the intake and exhaust mods.
I also added a dowpipe with no cat when I did the clutch to maybe there is where the difference if from. I see on your sig you have some mods to open the breathing

I had all those mods when I was getting 230-250/tank. I was just suddenly 200 miles tanks. At first I blamed the 155mph sprint on the open highway, but then after this past tank of hardly ANY boost, I still got 200. It's SOOO hard to stay out of boost. It's too damn addiciting.

Every single stop sign and left turn I have to hold myself back from power sliding through intersections and keep off full boost. 90% of the time, I hold myself back just fine, but I drive and Evo, and anybody that drives an Evo, I know has those temptations as well

So staying out of boost is hard But even when I tried, MPG stayed the same.

So far my best was a highway trip where I got 260 miles on one tank. That's my personal record. In city driving I usually get 180 to 220 depending on how often I hit boost.

I think by far the biggest difference is a tune. Those running leaner a/f are going to see a lot less fuel consumption in city driving.

well the car will always run 14.7:1 which is city... unless somehow you force the car to run 15.5:1 or 16.0:1 in closed loop... but I don't know how to do that

I would think it's the opposite: during city driving I think most will rev above 3k on a regular basis which means you are in open loop, and running rich toward 10:1 A/F near redline on a stock tune.

Damn you guys get good gas mileage. I get around 220 or so with a tank. This headlight theory might be something to look at, I work at night and drive with my headlights a lot. I'm still stock except for a megan catback and a K&N filter. I think I'll be getting a tune soon.

open loop is a combination of RPM, load and TPS. shifting at 3K at MAP or in vaccum will not put you in open loop.

Are you guys honestly thinking about decreasing headlights useage to increase mpg? Go in a diet. Take off your wing. Increase your tire pressures all around. The alcohol content in gasoline increases in the winter so don't be alarmed. Just, please, dont blame the headlights.

We're both on the same page on when our cars hit open/closed loop, if you read my last post I stated you hit open loop above 3k.

Where we disagree is that you think city driving involves not shifting above 3k, which is impossible for me as I rev over 3k all the time. I wish I had the discipline you have.
