Another Mpg Thread?!?!?!?! Seriously?

Yeah... I've been getting 200-210/tank lately in the past 3 tanks. I'm usually able to get roughly 230-250/tank. I read a whole bunch of MPG threads and some say o2 sensor, others blaim cold weather. Well, I have heard cold weather can cause a decrease in MPG. It has been a bit colder in the past few tanks.

I did a quick google search just to see what I could come up with. Driving with your headlights on was one suggestion as to why MPG could be bad. Alternator having to draw more current. Now lately, I've been using my "auto-off" headlight feature, or whatever it's called. I just leave them on all day. I can't remember exactly, but It seems when I started doing this is when I started getting poor MPG. This in conjuntion with the cold weather possibly.

With all the threads I read, there are people getting 160/tank?!?! Double you tee efh!!!! That's insane. So far my absolutle best is 267. I average around 230-250/tank. As far as MPG, it's between 17-21. but this past tank I think was about 207miles or so, and I babied the hell out of the car about 90% of the tank. I'm thinking this "headlight theory" might be worth looking into.

Anybody have any opinions on this "headlight theory"?

I think headlights would make a very small difference if any at all. The biggest factor that is easily controlled would be your tire pressure. Going as close to 40 psi as you can tolerate will improve your fuel economy.

BTW, I normally get 220 miles until the light comes on. Around 20mpg for mixed city/highway driving

I get about 290-310 per tank, but thats keeping turbo use at a minimum. With normal not mpg-oriented driving I get about 260 a tank. The windows are a big factor, if you keep your windows down kiss your money goodbye, also the front undertray helps mpg as well as AC, Power Usage, and even keeping it waxed!! A waxed car has less drag. Less drag = more mpg. Removing the wing is good for 1 mpg or so I would imagine. That thing can create some drag I bet, downforce too though.

I'm going to check my tire pressure for sure. I just wanted to hear some opinions on the "headlight theory". Especially since I have HID's, I wasn't sure if that drew any extra energy.

I'll be happy if I can get my normal 230-250/tank. I would normally get that 230-250/tank without avoiding boost either. This past tank, I kept out of boost and used fifth gear as often as I can and STILL got 200/tank? That's a little crazy I think. Not too mention two out of three of the tanks had 155mph sprints But this very last tank, I was VERY VERY easy on the car trying for better MPG thinking my stupidity was the cause of my poor MPG in my last two tanks. Now that I've gone through a tank in under 210 miles avoiding boost as much as I can, I'm not sure what's going on.

Of course, I don't drive the car daily. It sits most of the week, and since it's been espeically cold, it may have caused a great loss in tire pressure.

Mabye your local gas station got a bad batch of gas. I would go somewhere else next time? Worth a shot.

I've been getting ~180-190/tank for the past couple of months. It's been 95% city driving, though. I normally drive with the windows cracked about an inch too.

Teehee =/

1 hp is like 776 watts IIRC. HIDs only draw like maybe 100 watts? So we'll just call it .1-.2 hp. That's not even going to be noticable in your gas mileage. Tire pressures and having your windows rolled up will make a bigger difference.

I usually only get 14-17 mpg

I can get around 220-240 on E85. I remember on the way to Ohio last year I had the translator running a tad too lean in mid-range (but never went full throttle) and had 340miles with a quarter tank left

Yeah, I've been using Sunoco. So last night I just filled up at BP. We'll see how that goes.
