Reliability of EVO 8/9

Thinking of picking up a low-mileaged EVO. Still not sure which one. How is their track record? Do people experience any problems?

I am not new to turbo cars but I don't want to get my hands dirty for a stupid reason.

I depends. If the car had the crap driven out of it than it will more than likely have problems later down the line or sooner. If the car is taken care of than you have nothing to worry about.

I bought my evo with only 28k on it. Within 2 months of purchase the tranny and the transfer case went out. Well the tranny synchros became more pronounced. Have some side cash ready in case.

If you're going to buy a used Evo, then you better make sure that the car was well taken care of

The reliability of my 05' Evo has been exceptional (compared to other cars I have owned). I only have a TBE and a tune but track the car at road course events at least 6 times a year. The problem is finding one that has not been modified, drag raced or otherwise abused. Find a stock one with no drag race launches and you won't go wrong. Great car.

Ive had my Evo for almost 8 months. Been happy with it. Clutch went out, but that was expected.. plus the clutch in the car wasnt stock, it was an Exedy Stage 1 $250 ebay special. No wonder it couldnt hold the power lol.

It all comes down to how well the previous owner took care of their Evo. If you take care of it and maintain it and don't beat the **** out of it, the Evo will be a pretty reliable car. For instance, I baby my Evo IX. I have OCD when it comes to maintenance...I check my tire pressure at least twice a month...that's how crazy I am. I also don't beat on the car. It's my daily driver and I drive it like a daily driver. I go out for a spirited drive on a windy road every so often, but even then I don't beat on it. I've come to realize I really don't drive my Evo like it was meant to be driven. I just drive it like a normal car. If you can find a car like the way I just described mine, then you'll be fine because it means it was very well maintained and taken care of.

Also, you have to be extra careful if the engine/intake/exhaust have been modded. That can be a good thing (if they have top-notch parts and everything was installed correctly and tuned safely). Or could be a very bad thing (if they have cheap parts and the install and tune were crappy).

Anyhow, good luck in your search. You'll never own another car like an VIII or IX.

I have 66,000 miles on my 05 Evo. I drive it farily hard but I don't abuse it (no launches, racing, etc). Maintenance has proved to be only a little more expensive than a normal car. If you do the stuff yourself - oil changes, fluid changes, spark plugs, brakes - it's pretty affordable. Heavy modifying is costly, though.

Thats kinda reassuring since the one I am buying has 60k.
I'm not modding mine for a long time, as i've got the extended warranty AND i'm a mechanic, I dont feel like constantly fixing my own car. lol
