your a hell of a calm person.. If that would have happened to me i would have been calling the ambulance and not the police to come pick up that guy... I would have kicked the sh*t out of that guy right in the gas station parking lot cause the one dent would have been enough but to come back and find you.... ? you should have put him in the hospital and not jail anyway around you would have to pay out of pocket for the repairs but could have have the satifaction of making that guy sleep in a puddle of his own blood..

Meh, I'm not talking about a perfect world where everything you shoot at is printed on paper and usually circular. I guess you haven't had much trigger time against targets that are moving and trying to kill you, huh? The 9mm round is stupid and its military adoption was the result of bean counters who were looking at the cost savings while we were not in the middle of any major conflicts. The fact that it's the standard NATO round makes me sick. The basic logic went something like "well, we're not using it now, so why not downsize to save money?"

WW2 was won by forces carrying the .45 cal and lost by those carrying a 9mm. Now, all the good guys carry 9mm and the bad guys use anything they can get their hands on. Now, I'm not trying to say that the 1911 had a major voice in the outcome of the war or anything....But you know how it goes.

It's lack of stopping power in combat is well documented and it's no surprise that the military is now looking for a replacement for it (back to .45 cal, of course). I will agree that when talking about guns, like many of the mullet-wearing rednecks across America say: There's no replacement for big displacement.

didnt take the time to read through everyones post, but this story is crazy. It sucks that you had to deal with a jerk like that, and it also sucks that he had his kid in the car. I give you mad props for being so calm and collected about it, because if it were me, i seriously more than likely would have gotten out of the car and he would have been the victim of a severe beating, if he was lucky I didnt shoot him a few times...I get a$$holes that tail-gate me like that (where you cna hardly see their headlamps anymore...and they are in an SUV lol) as I am sure everyone on here has had it happen to them as well, but I have never had anyone act like that...and thats a good thing, for me and for them...

Sounds like you handled the situation maturely which is increasingly rare these days. I'm rather shocked at how many people say they would just shoot the guy, evom is full of tough guys I guess. I find it funny how acting like a thug and shooting someone for damaging your property is considered more manly than being civilized. It's things like this that make me proud to be a canadian.

It's nothing about being a thug or an internet tough guy. I originally said that it's a good thing the guy didn't try to break his window with the tire iron, because then he would have gotten shot. It someone is about to hit me in the head with a freaking tire iron, you're damn right I'm going to shoot them. Canada's cool and all, but I don't want to be turned into a floppy head by getting hit with a tire iron.

Like I said before, it's nothing about being a tough guy. I just don't really fancy the idea of being defenseless. A great example of what I'm talking about can be seen in the video clip right here:

being a pragmatist, i find it difficult to understand the thought process involved in concluding self-defense is unjustified if someone fears for their life or the life of others. to put it in perspective, the only reason a police officer would have any control over this situation (had one been present...which they are normally not because it would necessarily mean half of the population would be an officer assigned to one of the other half of the population, shadowing them everywhere they went) would be their ability to apply equal force or greater force in the form of a pistol or other lethal or less-than-lethal weapon. a police officer is not a supreme being and has no more or less rights under the constitution, yet if someone threatened one wild they proceeded to re-arrange their patrol car with a tire iron, i doubt most people would be so critical if they used deadly force in their defense. i don't know why some people have such a difficult time applying the same point of view in regard to the average person. the fact is, the OP could not have possibly known the intentions or outcome of this confrontation, and he is very lucky he was not killed. if he was not in the car and it was a case of simple vandalism it would be a different story. however, the madman was trying to coax the OP out of the car, presumably to cause him great bodily injury or death. maybe some people are failing to recognize this?

I understand that but at the same time police officers are put into power by the state in order to maintain law and order and to deal with situations like this. As you said, if everyone simply defended themselves, why have cops? What if the guy had no intention of hurting the OP but simply wanted to damage his car? There are too many unknowns for me to justify killing the guy as others have suggested. If a cop shot someone up here, it would be a big deal. Cops got into **** here for killing a man in an airport with a tazer yet he was acting in a "crazy" way. Turns out he simply didn't speak english.

Flight before fight if possible, otherwise you may get a bit of time to think about your decision.

I agree ... If this was on the news and someone saw that a man was beat to death with a tire iron for driving his evo too slow, everyone in here saying were gun happy would be agreeing with us.

come at a cop with a tire iron and see how close to him you get

ambystom01: i don't think the man who threatened the OP was acting in that manner because he was still learning english. and yep, if cops are around you should let them handle it. if there is a way to avoid the confrontation, you should. however, if all else fails, you as a human have the basic right to be alive, and to defend yourself in the face of eminent danger to your life or the life of others. anyway, here in oregon it is perfectly legal to carry a concealed weapon and use lethal force if you FEEL your life is threatened. that's one of the reasons that, although it's a nice place and i love to visit vancouver, i would never live in canada, or other states in the US that would rather have their citizens die at the hands of criminals while on the phone to a 911 operator than actually defend themselves. at that point, the cop who shows up is only there to write the report and look for the guy who did it. you are still dead...

I know that, it was simply a comparison to emphasis my point that sometimes something else is going on.
What does it mean to "feel" that your life is threatened? That's my problem with that kind of law, it's too subjective. I vastly prefer living in a country where I have to fear criminals than in a country where I have to worry about making a stupid mistake and pissing off the wrong person.
