Awesome write up! Thanks! I will be getting my evo 9 in a couple of weeks

I have quite a couple of questions however. I'm sure others will benefit if they are answered There's quite a couple so be prepared! Any input is appreciated!

Could you please explain the Evo 9 Models' differences? I know theres an EVO 9 MR and an EVO 9 GSR. Are there any other EVO 9 models? I know the main differences are the wheels, suspension, and the 5speed vs 6speed transmission. Am I missing anything? Also, Which one is better suited for drag racing (both bone stock) and why?

What are some aftermarket exhaust manifolds that produce more power then the ported oem exhaust manifolds? How much of a power difference are they from each other? (For ex: Aftermarket vs ported OEM vs OEM?)

I also read up on aftermarket intake issues. Will an aftermarket intake produce gains? I remember reading that the idle would be erratic with an aftermarket steel intake pipe. Is there any other way to fix this besides MAF scaling? (What is MAF scaling btw? lol) What would perform better, a stock intake with a cone filter vs aftermarket?

What is the highest recommended boost level for the stock turbo while getting tuned? (With all other supporting mods)

How much whp can the internals on the 4G63 handle before having any issues?

This is the basic mod list I have at the moment:

Shifter Bushings, Lowering Springs, AEM Wideband, Boost Guage, TBE, O2 Housing, Intake or Stock intake w/ Filter, Upper/Lower IC Piping, 255 Fuel Pump, FMIC, Ported Oem Exhaust or Aftermarket Exhaust Manifold, Electronic Boost Controller, Turbo Timer, Throttle Body, Sprung 6 puck or twin disk Clutch, Lightweight Flywheel, Intake Manifold, 272 Cams (Undecided on lift), Tune.

Are there any other supporting mods you guys would recommend to help with my setup? Will I need to upgrade injectors and/or ignition, or will oem handle fine?

Does anyone have a whp/torque estimate on how much my evo would be making with the above mods? 93 Pump and no meth. I plan on getting decent quality parts, no ebay brands.

Thanks a billion,
Jay

awesome write-up.

Only critique is "drive ability" is really one word.

Hi I'm running a aftermarket BOV at the moment (RacePro) and would like to get the IX diverter valve (aka JDM MR diverter valve). Would I be able to fit that without having the original evo 5 BOV, or do I need some parts from that first?

What would be the limit of the stock MAF (Evo 8) in terms of WHP ?

My next set-up will be around 550-600WHP.

Thanks

there really hasn't been a limit found... mellon tuning has surpassed 700 whp on a stock maf

you are certainly limited by the maf versus various stand-alones but there is no said limit

Wow ok, thanks for that fast answer.

I guess at that level (700WHP) the reading accuracy (HZ) will be affected, I mean not as precise as other options ?

And limitation is comming mostly from the small size of that maf (about 3'' diameter) ?

I guess it could affect the spool-up too.

I don not want to go stand alone, I had a bad experience on my DSM.

a properly tuned stand-alone is going to blow away a maf based unit all day

it's all about the tuner

I would suggest pm'ing mellon tuning for more advanced maf questions

What hp level will the stock 8 injectors max out at with a Walbro installed?

Also Im plannin on porting my ex mani, is it worth sending the hot side of the turbo out for porting also?

A few questions. In the write up its mentioned the IX bov which is an option for me but im also considering the Synapse ssqv in terms that it still recircs and doesnt leak ever supposedly, any thoughts or inputs? and secondly i barely bought my evo before i deployed so im trying to stack a few gifts for myself when i get home and my second purchase is probably going to be the injen intake and ic piping kit. does anyone have or use this? i know the lower piping is better but with a good airbox already and not really needing to change the upper piping is it a waste? And lastly is driving on these mods without getting a tune dangerous to the car or just holding back potential?

stick with the ix diverter for now...until you are running 25+ psi of boost then it is the best way to go

injen intercooler piping is wildly used and it works fine...changing out the upper pipe has no significant benefit but it can't hurt

driving without a tune won't hurt anything but the car won't perform any better
