Theoretically speaking, yes. But the EPA estimates, using both pre-2008 and 2008+ methods, put the 5-speed ahead of the 6-speed. Unless someone can provide specific examples with legitimate calculations from a STOCK car proving otherwise, we can't dispute the estimates.

I have personally, in my current stock IX SE, averaged as high as 26.22 mpg for one tank while surpassing 25 mpg on two other occasions (25.37 and 25.09 mpg) throughout roughly 13 months of ownership. On my previous Evo IX (also stock), I went beyond 25 mpg once (25.23 mpg).

So unless someone has accurately documented anything similar or better for a stock MR, then I'm giving the nod to the 5-speed for having slightly better mileage while we're on this discussion of highway mileage.

LOL People on here are rediculous. The 6 speeds weak gear is 4th, which only is weak due to overheating, hence road racing. If you aren't planning on road racing on very hot days, you have absolutely NOTHING to worry about. Drag racing doesn't cause the tranny to overheat the way the constant friction of moving parts for long periods of time as in road racing. 1st in the 6sp I believe is actually THICKER than the 5sp, with the 2-3 being similar in size, 4-5-6 obviously going down in size. There are VERY VERY few people who have been able to blow out the 6sp, definitely less than 4-5 people on this whole forum (razorlab, warrtalon being two come to mind who also were ROADRACING at the time in what I'm pretty sure was hot weather)! So if you want to put all the mods you want on your car go ahead, as long as your not constantly beating on it (where any tranny would give), or roadracing every weekend, your fine. I will agree with the others though if ROADRACING is what you intend to do with your car (where massive heat and friction is your enemy) stick with the 5sp, for anything else the 6sp. can handle what you throw at it just as well as the 5sp. . That should make your decision alot easier as to this is stronger thats stronger, this is crap that is crap, I heard this and that bs. If you feel as if you still are unsure about what everyone is saying (including me) search around, and you will find your answers. Have fun and good luck .

Since youre going to be using it as a no/lo-modded DD, it comes down to which ever one you personaly prefer. Test drive the 5sp and 6sp back-to-back. I do sometimes wish Id had the 6sp when on long freeway drives but I use the 5sp as a DD and I love it! Good luck!

I have a 5-speed Evo 9 SE, but I test drove a 6-speed MR before I bought the SE. The MR's tranny does have a lighter and slightly-smoother feel IMO. And I liked revving lower on the highway in 6th gear.

Still, the 5-speed is fine, once you're used to it.
