Cams...too much??

hi i dont know if this is the right place to ask but ive been around some evo's for awhile but none of which have the mods im going for but i have an 03 evo 8 and its completely stock minus a full 3 inch HKS carbon TI exhaust with 3 in dp and test pipe and i ordered

HKS 280/280 cams
ACT 2600 Clutch w/ pressure plate and throwout bearing
Manual Boost controller
Walbro 255
jdm mr bov
Buschar Racing Big front mount
Injen Uicp and Licp with intake
and a tune from Dynoflash

my question is is 280 cams to much because im seeing everyone on evom.net with 272s and i dont want to install the 280 and be screwed...so what are your opinions
i really appreciate it

Pretty sure that Injen LICP is going to be a waste since the BR FMIC uses one that is purpose built for the FMIC. In fact, all of that Injen stuff is a waste. HKS 280 cams are simply a more aggressive cam. It isn't that they are "too much" or whatever. I really think you didn't do any research at all before you started throwing your money away. Good luck.

Longer duration cams allow for more air flow, which is typically what's needed when you go to a larger turbo. However, they can be more difficult to tune, and can put more stress on the valvetrain.

My personal opinion is that you are fine with 280's. I don't know the lift specs on the HKS 280's, but if it's 11.0mm or more, I would suggest looking into a valve springs/retainers upgrade as well.

I'm pretty sure that the duration is 10.8. I might be wrong though.
They are supposebly one of the only cams that you don't have to upgrade the stock valvetrain for the 280s

HKS 272's work very well on the VIII and stock turbo. I hope you don't get stalling issues with the 280's.

I had the hks 280's when they first came out everyone said they where to big. Well there not and my car ran fine even on a real crapy tune. I used my with stock springs all the way to 8200rpm no problem.

My experience with 2g's and 280's is there is a driveability issue with stalling at idle. But I've heard that the evo's don't suffer from this problem...at least not as much.

However, even if you can run 280's on the stock valvetrain to 8000RPM, I would definitely not recommend it. You're putting way more stress on those components then were meant to. They will eventually fail and possibly cause more engine damage. With HKS 280s, I would highly recommend upgraded components.

No your off i never had any idle problems what so ever and i had the cams in for over a year. As long as you have a good tune you wont need to upgrade your springs.
