manifold studs broken

hey guys i was taking off the studs that go from the exhaust manifold to the turbo housing thing and they broke. as a result i got a pretty big exhaust leak. can i replace these with bolts from a 1g or something or what do i have to do? i dont want to have to take the whole turbo out. two of them broke on 1 side

First your gonna want to get them out and that is likely going to mean taking the manifold off to get at them. You can drill them out or try using two nuts to unscrew the stud.

Now once your clear I'd run a tap through the hole and replace the bolt with new bolt. I can't remember the exact thread size when I did this but I'm sure its somewhere on the forum just search it out.

Most likely you will have to take off the turbo to drill them out.
Happened to a tech at the shop once. Took a good half day to take off the manifold to reach all the bolts and drill out the broken stud and replace it.

You're in for a weekend of fun, unless you get lucky.

If you have a tough time a machine shop should be able to extract it.

Cheers!

Been there. A hard metal drill bit and some PB Blaster should get you through it. Drilling out the bolt with a regular bit is like pissing into the wind. Hopefully you can get it to unscrew.

You can get bolts at any hardware store.

Even Stainless steel if you feel like it but they will all rust the same. Put some of that no stick metal powder lube used for o2 sensors on them and the next time you take them off it wont be such a big deal .

If you have to tap it afterwards, I believe the thread is 10mm w/ 1.25mm thread pitch.

After spending an hour drilling out a broken stud on my hotside last night, we broke 2 mani studs. Good times... I'll need to get some bolts for next time..

this might be a stupid question, but does an exhaust leak at the manifold cause the service engine light to come on?
