Works brain dyno with a/f coming soon
Thanks very much for the post of the independeny dyno readings. I am thinking about getting the reflash. Some questions:
Do you have a boost curve graph? Does the Works reflash change it from stock?
How much did the dyno run cost? I might take my stock EVO for before and after runs.
Now if Works would only respond to the contact I sent them on their web site.....

Use the comparison only to comapre the AFR from a Work's Brain reflash to the AFR of a stock ECU.
Do not try and draw any conclusions about 30 max HP performance increases here because measurements were made on different cars. I have seen over 20 HP variances between cars in both stock trim and ones with the exact same mods measured on the same day on the same dyno.
Conclusions about performance increases from the Brain reflash based on this particular graph are useless.
238 max HP on the Work's Brain/muffler delete equipped car may or may not be a reasonable increase. Can't tell without before and after measurements taken from the same car under the same circumstances. My first run for stock baseline on the same dyno was 240.4HP and 251.3 TQ. I'm not trying to compare my baseline with the Works mods (different day, different atmospherics, different car) but just make the point you cannot compare results from different cars.
AFR graphs without HP plot would help prevent the inevitable comparisons that will be made here.
Back to the point, AFR from Work's Brain reflash looks just fine.

To me it seems that the Works flash is running a safer A/F in the lower rpm band than the stock ecu. Which makes more sense to me since this is where the 19psi spike occurs in the power band.
And in the upper band it's still pretty rich. Seems like a good deal to me.

Definitely need to thank Sir Lurks Alot for this one.. instead of me.. We probably wouldnt have done this .. if not for him.

Ok, I see that the stock ECU is leaned out by works, and it does increase HP by 25 WHP, which is great. But is there any timing advance at all in this flash, of is the stock Timing curve maintained?
Did you happen to check you timing during this pull?

Ok now what everyone here has been waiting for...
First let me say.. I edited the dyno with Photoshop to conceal real names and to add the mods of each car. Plus Weather for the time was added.
My car (stock) runs really rich. No wonder I have exhaust dust all over my car a few minutes after I wash it.. LOL

The conclusion....A/F looks GREAT! The flash makes good safe power for not a lot of dough.
This is really long...sorry
I was extremely happy with the results. All you skeptics should be satisfied now. And all of you debating whether to get it....GO buy the WORKS...it is the best bang for the buck. How can you go wrong with a safe tune controlled completely by the stock computer? Isn't the fq300, just a computer flash from the factory warrantied by mitsubishi, geared at those who only use high octane? The factory tune is for california **** gas, so you know there is a lot of potential for power....all from the OEM controls.
I did one run with the air filter element and lid off and got 3.5 peak hp more while the a/f leaned out a touch. Tomssound probably post all of the graphs when he gets a chance.
We tried to get the winpep files, but they had an e-machine running their software and Mike (the owner) said it virtually crashes everytime they try to export a dyno file. This is the second dynojet facility that has had issues about giving me my dyno run files.
Unfortunately, Altered Atmosphere doesn't have the capability to graph my boost on their dyno. I video taped the boost gauge and tach during the first two pulls and will attemp to make a crude graph the old fashioned way. He didn't run it up to the new rev limit on the first run, so that is how I was able to get a free extra pull with the air filter out, all up to fuel cut. Sidenote...Altered Atmosphere is producing a filter for our cars that will be superior to all of the ones currently available. I have been promised one of the first ones, so stay tuned for more graphs!
Also of note they don't have a weather station hooked up to the dyno. I don't know how they do their correction factors. Possibly they input the temp/humidity/barometric pressure manually. I don't know how this is done? The correction could be could very different on different days. Tomssound dynoed before me when it was probably only 85-87 degrees. When I dynoed my car, it was 95% humidity and 94 degrees(ask anybody in DC/Maryland that day, and it was as hot as is gets!). After my next mods, I'll go back in the winter.
I do find it great, even if by coincidence, that my car put down the claimed 30hp gain that WORKS posted. Maybe this was the pretty consistent number that WORKS worked so long at finding before they posted their graphs. Probably all coincidence, but if Tomssound's car put down 210 to the wheel and is making the factory claimed 271hp that means I am making 307hp (fq300 range)at the crank. There would be more power available from a custom tune, and this may have something to do with the vishnu gains reported earlier. What does the off the shelf exede gains look like compared to their custom tune?
Still, the flash is super cheap compared to anything else that produces these kind of gains in a safe manner. The car was WAY more fun to drive after the brain flash. I don't think I got much hp, maybe 4-5 butt dyno hp, after the muffler delete pipe was added to the flash. But it IS NOT the exhale. It only cost me $36 because I made my own flange from scrap and paid a local muffler shop to crush bend 3" pipe. It sounds very good. Nobody can believe that there is no muffler at all on the car. No dron, only a big whosh when you get on it. Not nly is the muffler delete pipe not WORKS brand, but I only have the regular 93 octane flash. If you buy the flash and exhale you get a different tune. Maybe even 8-10 whp over the normal flash. This is all speculation and means nothing. I don't know how much the EXHALE will make with the flash because David hasn't released the plots yet. Whatever
And as for it limiting how much tuning you can do in the future with it, just take a look at big AL and the fastest EVO in the country. Seems like the flash plays well with all the other bazillion mods done to his car.
The conclusion....A/F looks GREAT! The flash makes good safe power for not a lot of dough.

Where are the A/F plots? You wouldn't tune without it, so I know they have them.
The brain is plug and play. Obviously you can tune and get more hp, but what are the limits you want your car tuned to. I Think Dave wants a completely safe tune for any evo off the street, he was able to come through, and still pleasd everyone I have heard make a comment on their new flash. Nobody has said they were dissapointed in their purchase....even AL who *****es about everything

An mbc and SAFC is a cheaper way to get MORE hp than a re-flash. There are also harnesses for the SAFC so you don't have to cut any wires. So if warranty is an issue simply unplug/remove the Safc. I still like the idea of a well tuned re-flash though also. It has its advantages as well.

+you still have to buy dyno+tuning time
I think after an safc and a good electronic boost controller and tuning you are over the price of a works ecu flash and all that electronic stuff is not very stealth usually.

Actually - my $$$ is on the re-flash; exhale AND the Apiture - thats the combo I would get - NO WAY that only makes 210 hp - someone was smoking crack who tried to play that off!!! The muffler is worth at least 10 hp and the apiture is worth 10 - I tested it myself
