Question Wanted: Engine number series for Evo1-3 and VR4

Hi Folks,

Does anyone know the engine numbers from the 4G63 out of the Lancer Evo1, Evo2, Evo 3 or VR4? I'm trying find a fool-proof way of telling what engine I'm looking at.

An example of an engine number from one of these cars would be useful. Or if you know some easily identifiable or measureable differences, would also be useful.

Thanks
Cheers
Alex

I've got a 4G63 and I want to know what car it orginally came out of. There are subtle differences between the engines from an Evo1-3 & VR4. The only fool-proof way I can think of is the engine number, if I knew the engine number ranges for each of these cars or an example of the number (which may give me a clue). Or if anyone knows another method?

The Vr4 has a different cam cover colour, but that can be easily changed / painted etc.

Cheers
Alex

Mitsubishi does not give the luxury of breaking down engine codes even if they switch orientation. It always breaks down to the 4G63 if you're thinking Mitsu turbocharged 4 bangers (or the DOHC 4G93 in the Lancer GSR) or if you're talking about the "big" VR-4, it's the 6G72. Try PM'ing Lan Evo for a bit more info.

I don't know about engine numbers, but the VR-4 engines are 6 bolt motors while the Evos are 7 bolt (talking flywheel bolts). The intake manifolds and engine mounts to the block are different as well. If the manifold says Cyclone and/or ECI Multi on it it's not an Evo motor. The heads are different too. I don't know of any easy visual way to tell between an Evo 1 -3 though. Do you have the turbo and manifold too? The Evo III came with a big 16G and a different exhaust manifold.

Yes, I've got the lot.

Isn't CD/E9A the chassis type? The engine number should be 4G63.....

Cheers

Okay go here:

http://www.vfaq.com/mods/exhman.html

Okay, assuming you have confirmed that it is an Evo engine (by the intake manifold) then look at the Eclise exhaust manifolds in the link. The Evo III manifold looks like the 2g Eclipse one, the Evo I-II manifold looks like the 1g Eclipse one.

Don't forget there's also a GVR4 RS engine as well. I know for a fact that the JDM Galant had "Cyclone Turbo Intercooled" on the intake manifold. I saw in the Philippines "ECI Multi Turbo Intercooled" was printed on the intake of the RS version, similar to this one:

I dunno if there's a real way to distinguish any evo 1-3 gvr4 4g63's by any serial numbers. Those are the only way i know how to tell, by intake/exhaust mani's and valve cover colors. But then again as some else said, all parts can be changed.
