Evo's Rust Issues [MEGA MERGE]
So after the post on rust on the Evo's, I took off my bumper cover and found some rust (of course) http://www.freek.com/~dorqus/rust/ I then called Mitsu Corp and opened up a "case" I called White Plains Mitsu and spoke to the service manager, who told me a district rep would be at that dealership and he'd call me and let me know when. He called me yesterday to tell me he'd be in on Nov. 4th, so I called him back to work out details. I told him "well let me tell you where the rust is so you'll know where to look" he said "no problem, just tell whoever is here when you drop off the car" I said "Well you're going to have to take off the bumper" All of a sudden he changed from nice to nasty and was like "No way are we taking off the bumper unless you pay for 4 hours labor!" I said "Well it should only take about 15-20 minutes to take it off, because that's all it took me!" Anyway long story short, he said unles you can see the rust w/out taking anything off the car, I shouldn't bother bringing the car in! Is that lame or what? I thought about driving the car down w/no bumper cover on it (It's only about 2-3 miles from my house) but my wife had a better idea, which is to call Mitsu Corp. and let them now that the dealer is refusing to look at the car and that I should find another dealership to take it to. Personally I think that Mitsu just won't admit that they messed up w/this car and it's build quality sucks (I've had 3 other DSM's, and all were WAY more solid feeling than my evo - 91 GSX, 92 Galant VR4, 97 GSX)

Those "chips" happen on a lot of cars (have not seen it on mine yet) I think the rear doors are not adjusted properly, the dealer should be able to fix it for you no problem, search the archives for the fix.
I only have the chips on my driver side behind the rear door. The doors should be adjustable since the passenger side sticks out more than the driver side. I want them to paint the piece back and fix the door. I also found some overspray on my car.
I think Al discovered the rust, and he fixed it himself. He realized it wasn't worth the troubles with a dealer/rep to fix it. I agree. It sucks, but I'd rather fix it myself than trust a dealer body shop guy. I think someone even did a 'How to' write up.
I agree that fixing the rust myself is preferable to letting Mitsy doing it. HOWEVR I should not be having to fix rust on a brand new car, that doesn't even have 1000 miles on it!!!! I will *never* by a Mitsu again, this car feels cheaper than anything I've ever been in.
yeah i know about the fix for the chips...sucks that mine is on both sides...but it took a while for the other side to get that way....I think its going to happen either way....the tires stick out in the front past the fender well, and then slings rocks to the rear, where they catch on that little lip....Oh well...ill probably just do some touchup paint.
Tell them seeing as how they won't service the car you intend to initiate a complaint with NHTSA due to the corrosion of a safety critical part - the bumper beam. Fact is, I think you should do this regardless. NHTSA has an email submission process for starting these complaints from their web site. Once you get it going they will contact you... send them your pics.
So, Mitsu is saying that they won't fix a "safety issue". If you try putting it that way then they might do it. Also since the car is still under warrenty they should have no problem fixing it regardless of how much time it takes, isn't that what the warrenty is for?
You don't think the EVO is a solid car!?!? I think you're using the wrong choice of words. The quality control may be lacking, but it is one of the most solid feeling cars I've ever drivin. The rust has nothing to do with the solidity of the car. As for saying you're old DSMs were more solid, again DEFINETLY wrong choice of words.
