Thanks!

BTW, besides the aluminum panels up front, is the rest of body panels galvanized?

I went to Wal-mart tonight and bought some Rust-Oleum products.

I got:
1. http://www.rustoleum.com/product.asp...ct_id=27&SBL=1

2. http://www.rustoleum.com/product.asp...ct_id=18&SBL=1(smoke grey)

3. 3M Sand papers.

I guess I'll go look for the zinc coating, rust stripper and clear coat. I think that should do it

I just went under the car and checked, there are no visible rust drip-off, or marks yet. I did not take off the bumper.

The car has 200 miles on it, and was built in August 2003 and purchased less than 2 weeks ago.

I did see fairly generous application of primer everywhere under the body when I was looking around.

Is it possible that is aware of the problem and
made a change in production.

What are the build dates of the cars that are rusting?

It would be interesting to correlate the info to see if there is a pattern emerging.

Also after removing the rust and coating it with rustoleum, is it possible to custom cut a gasket and put it in between the body and the bumper support.

May 2003-Apex Silver

I don't see why it would be impossible but I think it would be unnecessary. I think with all the products xtnct and I listed above, the rust problem should be well under control.

Rear Wing defect

Considering that we are on the topic of spoting defects with the Evo 8's. Would like to point out another strange occurance. As we know, the rear wing of the Evo 8 is predominantly made of Carbon Fiber. I have noticed on my car that there seems to be tiny unusual dots on one part of the surface area of the Carbon Fiber Wing. It almost looks like a blemish coming from the carbon fiber threads. Please check your cars and do let me know if you see the same thing. You may have to look at the surface area from an angle. Will try to get a photo out as well. Don't think its a big deal, however if it spreads, it may cause damage to the lacquer coating...

IIRC, has a TSB out on the CF wing saying the little imperfections in it are perfectly normal and acceptable. Take it FWIW...

Yes, White Plains Mitsu fixed the car at their expense. The guys in service were actually pretty cool, I have to say.

IMO fixing it yourself with a little POR would be simple and more resilient than taking it to a dealership. A lot of dealers would probably just pull the bumper, spray can it quick, and pop the bumper back on, just to get it back out of the door. I agree Mitsu should take care of it, but it's your dealer that you have to work with. How well do you trust your dealer and its mechanics (especially when it's on thier coin)??

Yes, I could have easily fixed it myself and been done with it (and satisfited that it would have been a good job) However, this way, there's paperwork in Mitsu that they fixed it. If say, 2 years from now, there's a recall or something on the rear bumper braces, they can't tell me "Well you tried to fix it yourself, so you're not eligible" or something dumb like that. I'm just covering my bases. Come spring I'll pul lthe bumper and make sure it was done right. I did a brief inspection after I got the car back (Just looking underneath it) and they did spray it, and use white lithium grease in between the bumper brace and the body, I don't think they lied about the work they did, especially since the district rep (who represents mitsu) was there to make sure the work got done properly.

Thanks Terry And FWIW, My car has a May 2003 build date, was purchase in August 2003, and had rust. I think it's *ALL* evo's, unless they changed how they build them somehow to include painting the bumper mounts.

I've had my Evo almost 2 months, only 775 miles on it.

Slid under the bumper today and saw traces of rust in the same area.

For reference the front bumper beam attachment points on my car does not have a similar problem.

(Note: The front beam is painted black, not body color like the rear beam.)
Ahh.. but did you check behind the brackets that the bumper attach to? The brackets actually meet the frame and you probably won't like what you see there
