I think this could really cause some damage if it was left like this - prob the entire bumper support area would rot away in two years - epsecially if driven in the winter

The fix is easy - hit it with a steel wool rust remover wheel on my drill - - sprayed it with silver zinc anti rust primer and one coat zinc anti rust enamel paint - good as new !

It sucks that this problem is out there - BUT - I rather do it myself than let idiot 's tocuh my car - - besides - they would all freak out the minute they opened the hood

Either that or it is just more visible in the early stages.....

I backed off my bumper beam w/o removing the skin. Same thing. Same color.

So that is 4 examples.

hey guys ..

i noticed rust behind my driver's side rear door. If you carefully look at the door compared to the passenger side ..the drivers side sits in like 1/8th of an inch, allowing the metal to be exposed. There are rust pit marks going all the way up the body right where the rear door is recessed. I went to mitsu and met with the local rep. They told me they are aware of the problem and are painting my rear quarter next week. My car has 13k on it ..and unless you guys put some sort of 3m weather strip on yours ..its going to happen to you. I spoke with jeff hill of turbotrix and he has silver like mine and has the same problem. To mitsu's defence they are taking care of it.. but this should of never of happend. 5 months old and people are having rust problems ... can you imagine after the winter ....

i think you are talking about the strange paint chips thing... I have 1 on my BBY EVO. ...sucks...is mitsu saying if it is under warranty...or is this "normal" wear and tear.

The way I see it...if it is indeed a serious issue. Mitsubishi will indeed recall the cars at some point. I've seen surface rust on bumper beams before.

If not...Mitsu is exposing themselves to potentially MAJOR lawsuits.

FYI: According to my dealer, this rust damage is covered by Mitsus Corrosion warranty. So, if you choose to do so, you can drop down to your dealer and ask them to take care of it. This is what I'm going to do.

Is your ride silver? I wanna see if any other color has this problem before I tear my bumper off.

Yes - silver.

We should start comparing build dates.

I'll start out. Mine was built in April 2003.

The lower picture is the beam itself?

I'm less concerned with the beam rusting. If the unibody is rusting I have a **BIG** concerns. Why? Because why would this be the only location?!

It is not clear from pictures alone that the rust is from the beam w/ tansfer to the unibody or the unibody or both.

Now given that rust is found at the intake it appears that the paint w/o clear coat is very thin. I hate to say it but I'm ready to believe that Mitsubishi is going to eat the first year cars one way or another.....
