Yes, there is a light bulb in there. I checked the switch, since mine used to light up when the parking lights are turned on.
I asked Russell at Mitsubishiparts.net, and was told to just get a new swith assembly (quite expensive).
Like many of the dash lights on an 8/9 Evo, they seem to go out earlier due to vibration.
For example, my cigarrette lighter, ashtray, foglight switch light and the hazard switch lights are all out, and I never bothered to replace them.
I 've had my Evo since April of 2003, and after about 4years they went out.
I did research the bulbs in the instrument cluster, and relamped them, because many of them went out. (Many of them are on, when the ignitions on)
I think about relamping the lights that are burnt out, but the only person that would really care or know about it is me, and it doesn't really bother me.

Two of my cluster lights burned out so I replaced all three.

Now the ashtray light is out (I don't smoke) it is not really a big deal but I want to replace that bulb someday (since it is not a big deal I keep putting it off).

my lighter didnt light up or heat up and the light in the ashtray was messed up too and i dont smoke either but w/o gps i might as well just stay home. Dealer replaced my lighter for like 50 dollars and everything started working again.

 

ok... so mine was never on (got the car used 2 years ago) and last night it just came on.... weird
