I have the shifter bushings installed under hood and cage and I also have a B+M shifter and a HKS twin disc clutch. My friend has a evo viii with almost the same milage as mine approx. 70k miles but all stock. I have drove both cars and I have not had a problem 1st to 2cnd shifting, my friend did install a act clutch this last spring and now his 2cnd gear is toast, you can put it in second but it doesnt move lol. Anyway if you are having a problem getting into second there has to be something going wrong....heres some things to consider. Clutch adj. as stated above, Syncros, have someone sit in the car and have them shift 1st to 2cnd with the motor off while they do that watch the linkages under the hood to make sure nothing is interfering with thier movement. You can try putting gm syncromesh trans fluid in it, but I doubt that would be a permenant fix. Only having 10500 miles on it and having tranny problems probably means something is wrong. No offense or anything but if you know anyone with a evo locally let them try it see if its any different with them driving. depress the clutch all the way to the floor by hand and make sure the carpet isnt stoping it from going all the way down. Let us know what you find! Good Luck!!!

I did have a simular problem but I dont know if it would apply to you. I had put a new motor in my car and put the wrong gear oil in i used gl5 our cars reqiure gl4. As far as it shifting fine when your not WOT. That does not mean your tranny is operating correctly. Syncros can be bad enough to effect WOT shifts but not effect regular driving. Also bent shift forks can cause simular problems, but they ussually result in the car poping out of gear also. I work at a honda dealership and we just had a acura nsx come in with the same problem and the throw out bearing, acutually started falling apart. This caused the car to not want to shift at high rpms. The throw out bearing was a oem acura TOB and the guy that drives it is old and doesnt beat it. Just figured it would be worth checking it to make sure its operating properly.
Can you make a video so we can see what it is doing?
Oh ya..no offense I dont know how much you know about cars, each syncro is seperate for each gear, as well as shift forks. if you have a bad shift fork or syncro...it can cause 2cnd gear to not engage properly or at all.

Let us know what happens. How are you shifting it? Since you said you haven't really abused it im guessing your not banging gears so no problem from that.

Well of course I get on it every once in a while but i never shift it past 7 grand ever.. so its not taking massive high rpm shifts. Everything feels very strong for me.. thats what is confusing.

the adjustment of the clutch pedal will bring it away from the firewall and closer to the driver right? and doing this will make sure the clutch is fully released when pushed?

I bought my evo ix used with 25k on the clock. It has aftermarket clutch installed, possibly ACT - it sometimes goes into 2nd like butter and sometimes it will go in kinda notchy - I'm gion' to try and adjust the pedal forward and hopefully that solves the issue.

Sometims when going into 2nd I feel as though the gear/shifter fork/whatever is juggling to fully go into 2nd.

i'm not sure what to do - syncros could be messed too perhaps?

Since new, my IX has been hard to shift from 1st to 2nd, at all rpms, except when fully warmed up. Until it is, I just double clutch 1st to 2nd shifts. Switching to Redline MT90 helped, but didn't cure the problem. I rarely get on it in 1st, so I haven't looked into it further. Like the OP, all other shifts are problem free, even when cold.

There's nothing wrong with your car. Do a search. This is a common complaint. Like the person above posted, just double clutch into 2nd until the transmission warms up.

Things that "help":

Changing the transmission fluid (many people use Amsoil 75w-90 MTG with success)
Shifter linkage bushings
Heavier shift knob (mine is 490grams)

It will never go away. Just get used to it....

Some of you people astound me with excuses to the real problem. A notchy shift in only one gear has NOTHING to do with the clutch. The clutch travel and movement does not change from one gear to the next. You may have a bent shift fork, you may have a buggered up syncro spring. Maybe a damaged syncro/ and syncro sleeve.

ACT clutches can give problems if they were not adjusted properly or a retard installed them. Then again so will all clutches including stock.
