Winter Project: '06 MR Needs TLC
I've been looking at Evos for a while, and picked up a fairly clean '06 MR last week that needs some engine work.
It has a brief knock on startup and a low oil pressure light after warming up. Dissecting the oil filter revealed copper/brass flecks.
The previous owner continued driving the car even knowing the engine needed repair.
I'm concerned about the turbo and other (preventable) damage from bearing trash.
As the teardown/inspection begins I'm considering my options:
My findings on disassembly will naturally influence the direction this build takes.

- Stock overhaul: Turn the crank, recon rods, hone cylinders, new rings, bearings and gaskets
- Built shortblock: new crank, rods, pistons and bore if necessary
- 2.3 Stroker: Need to compare prices to built shortblock

I would just go ahead and get a built shortblock. Easiest way, and in the end you'll about as much rebuilding the current block in the car. A stroker will run you more money and some on here will tell you it's not worth it. All depends on what youre looking to do with the car.

I'm not set on a stroker by any means. I need to get this thing torn down and see what I've got and what I'll need.
Minor update: Progress has been slow, but I'm figuring out the particularities of the Evo and have the subframe loosened and ready to lower in order to get some room under this thing!
Yeah, I don't know yet what the bottom line will be for repairs, but so far I think I'll be OK.
It is irksome though to be fixing damage that was preventable and to replace stuff that's just missing. How does one lose a radiator fan?

The crank is probly trashed...... I am way to familar with the copper flakes you speak of. If you don't plan to ever make more than 550 whp then just get a stock motor from a junkyard car and stick it in. Then you can sell anything good left from that engine to recoupe some of the funds. Im sure the block and head are fine, cams caps might be a lil scored from debris or low oil pressure.
