Sudden Squeak!

Hey everyone, I just noticed today a really loud and annoying squeaky rattle coming from underneath my Evo. Almost sounds like its under the engine, but then at times it sounds like its at the rear of the exhaust. You can hear it in the car, and when I roll the windows down, oh man is it loud! I've been searching the forums and I think I've found some similar noises but no fixes. Never heard it before today. It starts at very low RPM's while I'm driving and then goes away when I hit the gas and speed up. When I stopped the car to look for it, it seemed to stop when the engine fan came on, but then went away when I sat down in the driver's seat. Then as soon as I get back out of the car it comes back. Any ideas?

do you still have cats on your car? if so then it could be one of the exhaust shields from the cats or the manifold exhaust shields. Also does it only make the noise when you are driving? that could be the brake dust covers. James

Agreed on the heat shield. So far, I've had 2 pairs (the top and bottoms) rust off completely already, just got done removing the second pair today. The low-rpm rattles from under the car are tell-tale signs.

Now I find out that the head shields around the cat are on their way out but not yet loose enough to rip off, so I have to deal with a 2100-2300rpm rattle for a few more months it seems.

Here's a link to the youtube video. Lemme know what you think!

Squeaky!

It sounds a lot higher pitched when you're standing next to the car than on the video.

Thanks!

I do have an aftermarket exhaust, but it was on there for a good month before that noise started. I'll check out the downpipe and the braces next. Thanks for the input!

leave it running and jack it up, throw the stands under it and creep under. always better to get into the situation.

I agree with skyline racer. Sounds more like it's below the downpipe.

I had a loud noise that would come and go - thought it was the brace below the DP but it turned out to be a loose metal bracket that the undertray attaches to.

to the OP, so you've only had the exhaust for about a month or so? Usually it takes some time for an exhaust to "seat" and find it's natural position, it's possible that either it's resting/rubbing on the braces or you could have a clamp that's come a little loose.
