Wingless
Wingless
This is meant to be casually constructive and analytical, but hey I'm sure about 20% of the evo community will flip out over this so watch out for the fireworks....

My argument is based on a few key points:
1. Functionality - let keep this one short because many of us spend less than 1% of our time over 80- the wing begins to generate down-force at approximately 85mph.(at 88 mph you're gonna see some serious $hit)
... a trunk with holes in it does not generate down-force, just some drag.
Look at this wing doing its job!

2. Removing the wing does not eliminate unwanted attention.
I'll use personal experience here - a rexpeed type c wing and stock exhaust didn't keep me from getting pulled over by VA police...for my exhaust. It was embarrassingly stock, no misinformation here. You might be thinking (whatever man, im sure you were doing something wrong), I actually didn't get any type of ticket or citation that incident. It did help encourage me to get a 3 inch exhaust though because if I'm going to get pulled over, it might as well be legit...
It helps to think about this from a police officer's perspective...
A police officer worthy of our respect monitoring safety levels on any given road in the US may or may not be looking up while doing so...and they are gonna hear your exhaust...especially early in the a.m., so they are relying on their ears and peripheral vision...
A 4 door lancer droning like a (civic fart can/supra/z06/Porsche/subie...jk...whatever your exhaust sounds like) makes about as much sense as a dog that speaks English so they are definitely going to notice you and might even pull you over for an interview! Yay! you don't have a wing, Cool! you can see their lights easier-that saves time!

3. The wing is COOL - especially for us Evo 8 owners! Seriously, a full carbon fiber wing that survives some of the most ridiculous wrecks we hope to never see! Incredible! Carbon fiber weave is gorgeous, lightweight and a lot of folks spend a fortune adding CF parts to their cars. Enough said.
4. THE MOST IMPORTANT REASON It looks GREAT!
I love show and shine threads - the evo is a great looking car, but the majority of the aggressive styling is on the front end unless YOU HAVE A WING.
"hey bro, a jdm rear would really set that off"
"you should get some side skirts"
"now your stock wheels suck and you should sell your kidney to buy volks"
"are you gonna get the holes in your trunk filled? if not you are terrible"
"hey, it was smart of you to take the most interesting/unique styling element of your car and remove it and sell it for $200 so you can play catch up with an expensive bumper and god knows what else"
Sound familiar? Have you ever noticed how all the wingless threads completely ignore the front and rear 3/4 shots??? If they don't then they definitely put the camera on the ground because you'll never see a shot from eye level. That is because the evo has a tall roof and the trunk slopes down towards the bumper- basically the car totally loses the rakish look once you take the wing off and instead looks wayyyy front heavy. Sure you can make things better with a JDM rear and a do-luck trunk, but wouldn't you rather invest that money in a Roth IRA?

I leave you with a few thoughts. Have you ever really looked at a winged evo? have you noticed how the from the rear the lines of the wing match the lines of the quarter panels and c-pillars and against the rear windshield and it almost disappears?

Have you noticed how from the side of the car the bottom of the wing slopes up to distract from the anemic lancer trunk?

Some of you might point out that you can buy the RS without it , but in Japan you can buy an Evo without Brembos, so it doesn't mean its better without, just means its cheaper...
Goodnight
KEEP YOUR WINGS ON!

wow.
Based on your statements alot of things would be stupid not doing too.
carbon fiber fenders, while everything else is stock painted. Nothing like black carbon fiber fenders when the rest of the car is white.
Or a carbon fiber hood that weights more then the stock hood. Or even the cheap carbon trunks that weight more.
People will change what they want based on their opinion. I personally think an Evo with the "shopping cart handle" looks retarted, but thats just me. Besides, we all know the stock ones take work to keep looking good. After 5k miles most start to peel and make the $35k car look like a cheap civic with a big wing and fart can.
But then again, i drive an RS
Way to stir the pot tho man!

I took my wing off to draw less attention...for the record I had an RS trunk so it was legit (no holes)
tickets with wing - 2 (in six months)
tickets without wing - 0 (3-1/2 years)
my ix was loud as all hell and thanks to it's low key appearance I was never bothered
I don't even run a front plate on the car (requirement in jersey)
.....
my x currently has a wing but I have a stock exhaust and same result...no attention
my theory was always exhaust or wing...both never both

while we are on the subject, whats the point of replacing the stock lightweight aluminum hood for a poor fitting aftermarket carbon fiber piece
lol i see someone already beat me to it! but seriously engineers spent YEARS getting the FUNCTIONAL aero on this car right, aftermarket parts that actually work are few and far between

In my opinion the wing makes it an evo. cus when u drive by someone anywhere they say aww s#!t did u see that evo. Now when u take the wing off now ur just some lancer driving by. Just my two its is all about preference but for me WING FTW
