OP- The tow company is 100% reliable for not towing a awd car on a flatbed. The way that you are going to know if your transfercase is blown is if all three lights are on in the dash and you start leaking out acd fluid.

You don't get your car towed for having expired tabs... you get your car towed for having tabs that expired for a REALLY LONG TIME.

A friends broken car got pushed out of the garage it was being stowed in and parked on the street (un beknown to the owner), cop saw it, it got towed. 600 dollars later... its back in that same garage.

It's tabs were expired by over a year. Washington state law evidently is if your tabs are expired by more than a year....insta-tow.

OP wasn't just late on his tags... he intentionally did not renew them for an extended period of time.

Sucks to hear man.

Just curious but when the car is turned off, how much do the ACD clutches lock? I would assume hardly at all, since the ACD pump is not running.

If you had a non-ACD case, there would definitely be some damage!

1. The tow company is in no way, shape, or form liable. You should still persue this fully however, as someone may give you something just to shut you up.

2. IIRC when the parking brake is set, the center diff disconnects on the ACD cars. It states this in the owners manual.

3. "Not knowing" your registration was expired isn't a reason for them to not tow your vehicle. Ignorance of the law is the stupidest excuse ever. So I'd suggest you don't mention to them that "you didn't know" and expect sympathy.

4. You should probably start knowing.

5. Genuinely though... that sucks, I hope your vehicle is alright, and hopefully things get settled smoothly. Lesson learned?

Sorry m8, and good luck.

Wow, so much misinformation already in this thread. Just because "the city" towed it doesn't mean they can do.it recklessly and/or damage vehicles without care. The tow companies are subcontracted out and ARE responsible for damages especially due to negligence by the tow operator.

Here is a quick step by step as offered by a city q&a about this matter

Bring the issue to the tow company employee’s attention immediately before taking possession of your vehicle. Pay all required fees, obtain a detailed receipt, and retrieve your vehicle to eliminate any additional fees. Take photos of the vehicle and damage immediately. Document the date, time, and names of all company representatives you speak with. Contact a tow company supervisor and discuss resolutions. Document any actions taken by the tow company. If you are unable to resolve the issue with the tow company, contact the Tow Contract Liaison Officer in writing using the Tow Complaint Form and include copies of receipts and photos:

Also op- did they use a wheel lift truck? If they did, did they use wheel dollies to raise the wheels touching the ground or did they just leave your car running while they towed it?

ebay.

i dont think its 1 year insta-tow for all states. i googled earlier and it seems that cali has 6 months and a day before tow.

im sure the OP knew his tags were expired and its been expired. its your car, you drive the car daily, you get renewal notices, how do u not know? its like changing the oil. except tags have a longer period.

lesson learned for the future. small amount of money for tag renewal VS. getting towed and having to pay impound fee and possible damaged drivetrain (1500+)

small price to pay to save yourself.

Good luck. if the tow company doing what it was contracted to do (tow because you were illegally parked or extremely expired tag) then youre probably screwed.

After reading this post I'm now confused on the difference between liable and reliable. Good luck to the OP.

It doesn't matter if it was in gear or not.

Putting the car in neutral only disengages the tires from the motor, not the front from the rear. His T-Case is toast.
